Thanks. Found that page here at work, will run the diags tonight. Apparently the drive failed many months ago within warranty, but silly teenager didn't bother to let me know ;)
Should you find that the drive needs to be replaced, you are free to get it anywhere. My suggestion would be to work through these standard troubleshooting steps as a first step.

followed the instructions, turned out to be the error 39 problem. Everything working now.
