Go into the BIOS setup (F2) and set the drive from AHCI to ATA compatible mode.

Thankyou ejn63! Worked first time! Problem solved!

One further question though - I had to disable the Flash Cache Module in the BOIS setup before it would let me set the drive from AHCI to ATA. Assuming I can do so, should I re-enable it now that I've done?

No - XP doesn't suport FlashCache anyway, so leave it disabled.

Having sucessfuly installed XP over Vista, interrogating the Dell Drivers site, this lists 38 drivers I should install for XP running on an Inspiron 1525. I've downloaded them all, and studied the order in which one should install them, but 17 of the 38 don't seem to fit into any of the 9 categories, the order of which Dell say is important.

These 17 drivers are categorized on the download page as follows:-

Applications (6)

Bios (1)

CD/DVD (8)

Diagnostics (1)

SATA Drives (1)

The 9 Categories (in order of how one should install the drivers) are as follows:-

(1) Notebook System Software (NSS)

(2) Chipset

(3) Video Adapter

(4) Network Interface Card

(5) Audio Adapter

(6) Modem

(7) Wireless Network Card

(8) Touchpad, Trackstick, Mice and Keyboards

(9) Other Devices (Bluetooth Module, Dell Wireless Mobile Broadband Cards, and PCMCIA/Smartcard controller)

Guessing, I would say that the 6 Applications drivers fall under (1) above (NSS), and the remaining 11 drivers fall under (9) above (Other Devices).

Can anybody give me a better steer on this, before I go ahead and (being pessimistic) wreck my new installation?

OK, I'm a bit lost... I have the same deal going on...
Vista on an Inspiron 1525, and wanting XP Pro...
I got my copy of XP at my campus bookstore (Nice -$10)...

Any-who, I read what you guys talked about in this thread;

about disabling the Flash thing, and changing the AHCI thing..
I did just that...  I get the error "Program was blocked due to
compatibility issues..."  What's my problem?  I was thinking the

AHCI thingy was the fix, and everything would work fine...

Lost... Plus to, an explination of how to install the XP drivers (Later)
would be very helpful!!!  The best description would be an ordered list

by file name (eg. #1. R159538.exe, #2 R2304423.exe... pretty much
listed in order of how you should install)...

Thanks a million for whoever takes the time out to help a guy in need!!!
I'm going for my Master's in Media Arts and Sciences, and my educational
versions of MANY software aren't Vista compatible... To keep the costs
down, I'm permitted to transfer my software as OEM versus having to buy
newer versions that are Vista compatible...

Again, thanks!!!
