dimension 2350/ide/cd rom samsungcd-romsc-14bc and hl-dt-st cd-rw gce-8400b, let me thank you for your bhelp, however so far i am still in the dark.i have 2 drives and when insert any disc into either one i get the message "there is no disc in the drive" as per your advice i have done the following:
1.unstalled, rebooted the new hardware ballon flashed on and off. i went to device mrg and the drives were reinstalled, i checked status, all ok, i ran the troubleshooting tool all ok
2. went to device mrg no red or yellow marks, went to ms updated nothing partaining to cd.
3.uninstalled secondary ide channel rebooted and it was installed, ran troubleshoot that was there got "you have the latest update".no error mesgs, no drives missing in the device mrg. i get nothing when i try thr f12
The fact that neither drive is reading tells me that one of them is probably bad. In order to run the Diagnostics, you'll need to download
this and use it to prepare a floppy diskette.
sorry this took so long but i have been away, i downloaded to two floppies but then i couldn't get the floppies to open, they just make noise, the drives will play cd music but when i introduce a new cd it doesn'trecognize it.
yes we knew about the rw drive, bothdrives are enabled and i ran the troubleshooter, everthing checks out ok. here is the sequence: i choose teh file to copy , put new disc in rw drive, click copy the files waiting ballon shows i click the wizard shows, i clk on the wizard and place a disc in drive shows.

Please work through these standard troubleshooting steps first.
When you post back, please provide the model of your Dell system and the model number of the drive, which you can find in device manager.

Tigar:
That accepted solution button is to indicate which post has the answer to your problem. You can go back and change that choice, too.
Ok, that sort of limits the diagnostic options on your 2350. Are you able to play a music CD on either drive?

I'm sure you realize that only your CD-RW drive can burn blank discs.
Try this. Open My Computer, right click your CD-RW drive and select properties. Check the Recording tab and make sure CD recording is enabled.
