DVD\CD drive not recognized by any applications.

Question

Hello, all.  I have a 2 yr old Dimension 1100/B110 with XP home/SP3.  Symptoms: Sys Info does not show internal DVD\CD drive; Device Manager shows drive with yellow '!'; Record Now/Roxio burners do not see drive.  I have tried Driver Repair Tool, researched Dell Support (can't find way to just reload drivers) and everything else short of using the PC Repair application (which wipes out hard disk and replaces former data with the exact BASIC data that was on computer when shipped), which is not feasible since there is no way to save my present hard drive data without an external drive.  Tried attaching an external drive via USB: Sys Info no see; Manager sees with yellow'!'.  Substituted known good internal CD-RW using the exact same cable connectors with same negative results.  The problem seems to just be software; the mother board seems to function properly.         I am very appreciative of any ideas/suggestions.      /s/ Wonson.

Welcome to the forums ;)

I'd suggest you re-install the chipset drivers.

You should have a disc with them on it ('Drivers & Utilities'?), but you can download them off the Dell website, if you don't have the disc.

Getting them off the website would be best in fact. That'll ensure you're installing the latest ones ;)
