Bluetooth Problem

After receiving my XPS in October 2007, I connected all my Bluetooth accessories successfully and enjoyed them until one day in March 2008, when I tried to connect to my headphones, they wouldn't connect. Neither would my Interlink Bluetooth remote media controls work although my cursor and page controls on the same remote worked fine. Also my Bluetooth mouse and keyboard worked fine. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers repeatedly and all worked fine until I rebooted then, again they would not connect. I contacted Dell repeatedly and all 10 or more of the techs did exactly what I had already done with no success. I've now invested about sixty hours in trying to resolve this problem to no avail. Thinking it may be a software conflict; last week I opened msconfig and started disabling all unnecessary tasks but still no go. Thing is, sometimes I boot up and everything connects fine until I reboot and the problem is back. I am now turning to other Bluetooth users in hopes that someone in the world can help. Dell is also still trying to figure it out.

I'm having the same problems - has you received any help or solutions?

Hi: Don't feel so bad I've got the same problem.

I got a Inspiron 1721 a couple weeks back, installed a Truemobile 355 Bluetooth card in it.

Was always detected and still always is, I bought a Dell Bluetooth Travel Mouse, when I recieved it I installed the Set Point Drivers, Kicked up installed everything worked great.

When I'd shut down for an extended period I shut my mouse down of coarse to save power.

It always kicked up and was working after a restart or Cold Boot.

Until a few days ago it started getting to where as long as it was a restart there wasn't any problems, But do a Cold Boot and it wouldn't auto connect my mouse.

Checked through startup config everything was fine, Click on my Bluetooth Icon and checked it's settings also they were fine, Quick Set settings were also unchanged. went into Device Mgr and the Truemobile Card had a yellow sheild on it, so I checked it was enabled I disabled it then renabled it, worked GREAT until the next Cold Boot same thing happened.  [:'(]

So I checked True Mobile's Pwr Mgt the box allowing the Laptop to shut it down to save pwr was marked, So I unchecked it applied and Cold Booted again it worked, Rebooted a while later Samething didn't work.

So I finally uninstalled my Dell Bluetooth Drivers and reinstalled made sure the Pwr Mgt box stayed unchecked, and all it's settings were at default.

Rebooted again and it still worked.  :emotion-2:

So far as I know it's fixed but only time will tell!!!Has anyone else had to do this to get their's to work?

Or did I get Lucky? I don't know if this will Help you but it maybe worth the try...

I Only Hope this Helps...  GOOD LUCK...

PCgeek1,

I have this irritating problem, too.  Can't count the hours that I've spent looking for a solution.  I'm a pretty savvy computer user, but this one's got me stumped.  I paid good money for my XPS m1530, which I received last February.  It has had this issue since day one -- when I turn the power on, the bluetooth icon frequently does not appear in my system tray.  When this happens, I have to open Device Manager, then disable and re-enable the 'Bluetooth Radio'.  It will then function correctly.  I've looked everywhere for a solution.  Tried to implement the MS hotfix for bluetooth errors when emerging from sleep / hibernation, but it wouldn't allow me to install, saying something like "This fix does not apply to your system" when I attempted to install it.  I don't think this hotfix adresses our issue anyway.  My problem occurs when I power on my laptop in the morning after it has been shut down all night, not when it is coming out of sleep.  I am now incredibly frustrated with this.  Anyone with a solution, please help!!

Thanks for the post. At least I know I'm not alone in this.

I to am pretty savvy when it comes to computers, but I to am stumped on this one, I don't believe it's a Hardware issue as much as it is a Software issue.

I've run several different Flavours of Linux and haven't had this much problem in getting Stuff Fixed.

Everything is recognized but isn't Turned on so to speak. I even went into the Startup Services in Admin Programs into ctrl panel and fiddle with several things in Bluetooth Services, I thought I had them fixed but as soon as I do a Cold Boot it's Back, a simple Restart doesn't cause it.

I could understand in my situation if it was like this from day one. "BUT" it worked Great for a week and then this Started.

I'm not to sure a Vista Update of some sort didn't mess it up?  I'm about ready to do a Restore and start over to see if I can pin this down.

I'll let you all know when I get this figured out if ever. :emotion-14:

Well here's an Update for you Boys and Girls.

I contacted Dell Tech Support about this ungoing problem, And was informed to WHAT a Shock go to Device Mgr, Right Click on my Truemobile 355 Bluetooth Card, and Under Pwr Mgt uncheck the "Allow Computer to shut of this device to save power".

Well I hate to tell them this I've already tried it and it don't work...  :emotion-9:

I'll keep you up to date as to the goings on.

"UPDATE"- Well after the factory restore, I had the same problem once.

But realized that the Light while on for my Bluetooth Module was on.

The one on the Top of my mouse would Blink when in CMO's but not always during bootup into the Login Screen as it would at times before when the link ups where sucessful.

So I figured I try moving my Mouse Side to Side once it hit my Desktop, "BUT" before it completely finished booting up.

Well Glad to say it connects on it's Own now 99% of the time, and the other 1% works for moving the mouse Side to Side.

I know it's not a Fix Technically........But Hey IT WORKS.....

HOPE THIS HELPS..........

Speaking of temporary fixes, in addition to entering Device Manager and disabling, then re-enabling the Bluetooth Radio (which works), I can also simply use the on / off switch for the wi-fi devices that is present on the side of my XPS M1530 to turn the Bluetooth adapter off and on again.  This isn't a perfect solution either, as it results in being temporarily disconnected from the network.  This won't be  a great option for anyone who has any issues connecting or disconnecting from their network.

FYI.

Well Boys and Girls I finally figured it out.

This isn't going to be for everybody "BUT" it is a Fix.

            YES I said a Fix....   :emotion-2:

I bought me 2 weeks ago a Vista Ultimate Product RED Upgrade.

Went to try to do a Regular Upgrade as Microsoft and Dell both told me I could do, A CLEAN Upgrade I may add.

It glitched 98% of the way through, so I reinstalled using the Dell reinstall Disc for Vista HP, Went into do the Upgrade to Ultimate.

But instead of doing the Upgrade I chose the "FRESH" Install option, after First Boot I went in and deleted the OLD Windows folder.

And Vola it "WORKED" I haven't had problem one since, While I did still unchecked the let the computer shut this device down to save power.

It Works<<<<<<<<<<     >>>>>>>>>>>>  No more enabling and renabling every time I start my Laptop.

Has anybody made further progress with this problem, as no posts for a few weeks now?

I have a Dell XPS 1330 laptop running Vista Home Premium 32bit which was purchased about three months ago. Ever since I’ve had the laptop, I’ve had ongoing problems with losing BT connectivity with an MS mouse & keyboard when the laptop comes out of sleep or hibernation mode. It is fitted with the internal Dell 355 plus EDR BT card.

After many calls to Dell Support with multiple driver reinstalls, two re-installations of the operating system & two replacement BT cards – I still have the Dell 355 plus EDR , the problem has reduced to an irritation  level. After the second BT card replacement, when the laptop comes out of sleep mode, there is a delay of about 35 seconds before the mouse works & there is an error - event ID 17 logged in the Event Viewer: “The local Bluetooth radio has failed in an undetermined manner and will be unloaded”. The event does not occur if the laptop comes out of hibernation mode. Occasionally the mouse will not resume operation & then I have to use the wireless on/ off switch to re-activate the BT card.

I’ve tried un-checking the "Allow Computer to shut of this device to save power” option but no help.

Hence it appears that the problem can be alleviated but not fully solved by changing the BT card – why it took two changes of BT card I do not know.

As a tangential & curious observation I have exactly the same problem – event 17 error on my Dell Dimension 8300 desktop running Windows XP SP2 which has an external Logitech BT dongle connected by USB. This problem emerged when I recently reinstalled the Logitech mouse & keyboard software package – I had been running with the Windows generic drivers with which I did not notice this problem.

For the laptop, I’m currently chewing over whether to wait for Vista SP2 due in 2Q which I understand will include some kind of BT upgrade to see if that will help before going back to Dell support.

Not sure this applies to all the Bluetooth problems in this thread, but here is a fix from Microsoft regarding a Vista vs Bluetooth issue:

Thanks for the suggestion. I had tried this Hotfix some time ago but it could not be installed on my laptop because as I remember it, SP2 installed on the laptop  supercedes or includes this Hotfix. I am still living with this problem. The current staus is that on about 1 in 3 occaisions the BT service fails on coimg out of hibernation. I restart by turning the radio services switch on the laptop off & then on again. I'm still hoping that Vista SP3 when it arrives will sort this.

The BTHUSB error does not appear to be a error wholly internal to the laptop because it does not occur if the BT mouse is not available i.e. it appears to be triggered by trying to re-connect with the mouse. I think I'll explore with a different BT mouse - I do have Logitech BT mouse connected to my desktop which runs XP SP3 with an external Logitech USB BT dongle However as noted earlier in my original reporting of this problem the desktop also reports the BTHUSB error on coming out of hibernation although the link to the mouse is re-established after 20-30 seconds without needing any external trigger.

As many others, I too have the intermittent Bluetooth problem.  I have noticed that some have contacted Dell directly and have not received a resolution to the problem.  That boggles my mind and am wondering what approach I should take in seeking a resolution.  Has anyone asked for a replacement unit or refund?  Has anyone received a committment from Dell that a "fix" for the problem is in the future for sure?  It just seems to me that a company like Dell should be able to resolve problems with their products in a timely manner.  I guess I will keep an eye on this thread and jump into the direct contact with Dell game.  Hopefully I will find the "secret handshake" or "magic ring" to get to a positive resolution.  I will check back here with any updates.

In response to Chirsehy's posting I also felt pretty annoyed at Dell that this problem could not be fully fixed on what was then their top-of the range laptop. My problem was alleviated but not fully solved after the second replacement of the BT card by Dell on-site service which I'm grateful to say I took when I purchased my laptop. There is hence strong anecdotal evidence that hardware is part of the issue. However having got BT working with only occasional failures to resume I found that the failure rate increased when I reinstalled certain software especially Nokia & HP AiO. I came close to sending the laptop back & requesting a refund but took the view that after the changes of BT card it was probably not a hardware fault although it might be a design fault with Dell’s 355 BT card.

My view is that this is an partially at least an operating system problem – since I have a very similar but less irritating problem on my XP SP2 desktop.  I guess it is something to do with the way that PCs come out or hibernation & the Windows services & peripheral devices are powered up. As the fault on my Vista laptop only occurs when there is a BT mouse to connect with I speculate as a non-expert in Windows that on occasions the BT card is trying to re-establish a connection with the mouse before the BT Windows service e is fully operational & there is an error reported which in the case of my Vista laptop terminates the BT service.

BTW I put the same posting on a  MS Windows Vista forum but have received absolutely no response which tells me that the army of Windows experts out there don’t have a solution to this.

Well,  I started the quest with Dell Support and in the 2nd reply from them I was instructed to install the following.  I did and so far so good.  I don't know what the second program is but it left an icon of a lock in my system tray.

Will see what happen down the road.
