You should start by going to the CD/DVD FAQ (link below). Click the article "CD/DVD drive not working". Once you have worked through that, then come back to this thread and post exactly what happened.
Dan, did you ever get your DVD drive issue resolved? I am have almost the exact problem with my XPS M1710 laptop. Plays a dvd for 10 minutes or so then freezes. Then I can hear the drive trying to read the disc over and over.

No skarbak my DVD drive still doesn't work. I managed to play an Audio CD once but nothing else. I think my DVD is burned...

Did you try the Dell diagnostics (instructions also in the FAQ)? That's the best way to determine if this is a hardware or software problem.
