Hi shim.sim, how are you?

I have the same "ST9250421ASG" with "DE17" firmware as you... and obviously the same clicking sound...

I know that the "4SDM1 or 5SDM1, A00" update is for 7200.4 hard drives (we have a 7200.3), but... What happen if we force the update with code like "haxxorboi" mentions in other comments?

I'am not sure if Dell and Seagate will work together to release a firmware update for the "ST9250421ASG".

Sorry about my english :emotion-7:!

See you next time.

hi pablokorn, i dont think its a good idea to force the wrong firmware onto your ST9250421ASG, it is likely to cause other problems. if you are able to get support from dell directly then i suggest trying them first for help, if not the only thing i can suggest is to buy a new hard drive. i had a spare ST9320421ASG hard drive (which is exactly the same just 320GB instead of 250) and it has been working perfectly. It actually has stock seagate firmware on it, version SD13, so maybe if there is some way to get the stock seagate firmware for the ST9250421ASG, it might even correct the problem.

Are you sure that you have the SD13 version? Googling that FW I found that only applies to 7200.11 and .12 :emotion-42:, maybe I am wrong, maybe inside the differents hard-disks with similar specifications everything is the same, so every FW could work right!

My warranty is over, so.. no more Dell's help for me :emotion-6:.

I know that a reflash won't help, but... I'll give a try! I fount DE17 Firmware in this torrent: http://dl.btjunkie.org/torrent/Dell-Inspiron-1525-Vista-32-bit/3597812843e7deb821c03689f86caa9e7edeaff26d45/download.torrent

Thanks for the reply, I hope that your drive work like a tank for ever!

A few days ago, Dell released a firmware update (System BIOS version A15) for the Latitude D830:

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R253828&formatcnt=1&libid=0&typeid=-1&dateid=-1&formatid=-1&fileid=371907

The Fixes and Enhancements section says, "removed HDD Acoustic support." Does anyone know more details on this? Have you tried the update and did it correct the clicking problem?

I am contemplating whether or not I should install the firmware update as I haven't heard the clicking since migrating to Windows 7 x64. I am curious if Dell is finally correcting the problem that's been there for more than 2.5 years, or if this is unrelated.

A few weeks ago, my Seagate 120GB drive finally bit the dust. It would not boot any more. I could not completely repair it with Steve Gibson's SpinRite (grc.com). I ran the Dell diagnostic, and after the very lengthy memory testing completed, it started the drive testing and immediately reported a failure code.

Dell tech support promptly shipped me a refurbished drive as a replacement. Unfortunately, it's the exact same model that I already had. :( Hopefully, the refurbished drive will last another 2.5 years.

Hello

Has this issue been narrowed down to simply updating the HD Firmware on the HD? I have this Audible Clicking Noise issue with a Dell Latitude E6500 with a Samsung Solid State HD. I cannot find the proper file to download to upgrade the firmware for this drive. I found on the Dell Forums and Dell Support that SAMSUNG_MULTI-DEVICE_A00_R276369.exe has the files nessasary to upgrade the firmware but the instructions do not work. The file does not contain any Zip Files as indicated by the Instructions.

1. Extract all provided zip files to the Bootable USB Drive (extract to the root directory).

This will create a DSRD folder on the USB drive.

2. Restart you PC and Press "F2" to entering BIOS setting, select system configuration--> SATA operation --> AHCI or ATA

3. Set USB as the first priority among the booting priority of your system.

Refer to your system guide.

4. Turn system (PC) power off.

jasonmoran: I don't think that the clicking noise that you hear comes from your HD, because you have a Solid State one, that kind of disk doesn't have mechanical pieces.

Probably, you have problems with the microprocessor's fan, or maybe with the speakers.

Call DELL's support if you have warranty.
