From the Device manager, try uninstalling it. The restart the computer. The drive should reinstall at that time. While this has never worked for me, I have heard it solves some issues some peole have had, and it takes very little effort / risk.
Assuming the drive is bad, it is very easy (and cheap) to replace.
I have the same proble m with my HL-ST CD-RW GCE-8483B ROM on my Demesion 2400 Dell Computer. How do you solve your problem to get a the ROM drive to recognize the drive and cd?

I have the same problem about theHL-DT-ST-CD-RW GCE-8483B cd-rw rom on my Demension 2400 series. What was your cure for the dead cd-rw Rom problem?
