My HL-DT-ST CD-RW GCE-8483B is Dead. Help me Resurrect it because I'm Poor.

Question

I have a DELL Dimension 3000 computer with a HL-DT-ST CD-RW GCE-8483B Disk Drive. My operating system is Windows XP Home Edition. Everything came installed on my computer when I got it. THE PROBLEM: I've had this computer for about three years and the Disk Drive has given me no problems at all. Suddenly it won't work. I place a CD-ROM or Audio CD or Games CD or whatever into the disk tray and the computer acts like there is nothing in it (ie. Tells me to 'insert disk' when the disk is already in there). I've checked with the Device Manager and it tells me that everything is working fine. I've gone through the Troubleshooter program and nothing has helped. I've been to several Forums for advice and the best I got was to try and go to the computer manufacturer and find the DEVICE DRIVER and re-install it.  But I don't know what to do. My computer tells me the disk drive is working fine but it doesn't work at all. No life there at all. Don't know what to do. Been to Microsoft and the cable company that supplies my internet modem they both say the problem lies here at DELL. My computer was a gift because (I hate to admit it but) I'm poor. I could never afford a computer and I can't afford to have a specialist to come in and look around and fix this. Can anyone help me? Do you think re-installing the Device Driver will help? Where do I find it? I can't use it from a Disk because my DISK DRIVE isn't working. HELP ME, PLEASE. I SIMPLY HAVE NO WHERE ELSE TO TURN. Any advice at all would be appreciated. From the Device manager, try uninstalling it. The restart the computer. The drive should reinstall at that time. While this has never worked for me, I have heard it solves some issues some peole have had, and it takes very little effort / risk.

Assuming the drive is bad, it is very easy (and cheap) to replace.
