First power down system>remove battery>flip laptop over and remove one screw that holds the drive in.Slide drive out>pop in new drive>replace battery>power up and it should be detected.
The drive you can replace with i know for sure is the TSST corp DVD+ -RW TS-L632D ATA Device. It is the same one that fits the E1705,you can also choose a different brand, just make sure it is a slim drive.
Thanks--any recommendations for cheap/reliable sites from which I could get the TS-L632D, or recommendations for other compatible slim drives that are cheap/good?

You can go to geeks.com and get it there,or better yet parts-people.com. here, http://www.parts-people.com/index.php?action=item&id=1354 .
If you do not get the toshiba drive you will get a compatable drive for it,they have all of the brand names that will fit your system.

Thanks...any recommendations for another compatible drive that's a bit cheaper? I'm shooting for a drive that at least plays DVDs, for under $50.
