Somehow I was able to install a couple games right after I got the new Studio Hybrid, but now the optical drive won't read any of the CDs I put into it.  I can take those same CDs and run them on my Dell laptop as well as an older computer that I have so it can't be the CD.  Am I supposed to be able to run store bought game CDs in my optical DVD-RW drive?

betty555,

So your saying that DVD is not read at all? Do other CDs or DVDs get read in this drive?

Same with me, I cant install  some of my discs without it glitching and then they dont run, my computer also makes a loud noise with discs too, one time after i cancelled the install operation my dell studio hybrid glitched and opened literly 200 internet  explorers. I think it has something to do with the disks not centered properly. I got mine the other day so i am going to bring it back to the store!!

I am having the same basic problem.  I use the drive primarily to view movies.  It worked for a while, although a little glitchy (very slow load and burn times).  However, recently it just stopped reading discs altogether.  When I put a disc in it makes an odd grinding noise, and then causes a (not responding) message in explorer.  Once explorer is responding again, I click on the disc drive icon and get the "insert disc" message.  It also ejects the disc at this point.  I have tried commercial DVDs, home burned DVDs, Data discs and music discs.  All have the same effect.

I wish I had a solution to this.  I bought 2 Hybrids.  I had the same DVD drive failure you did and a tech came out to replace it.  Then the DVD drive on the second one I bought wouldn't allow you to insert a disc.  It would go in about 95% of the way and then bind.  That too was replaced by Dell.  Now that drive is sporadically faling to read the CD or DVD that is in the drive.  My warranties are about to expire and for the first time in buying 9 computers from Dell I'm not happy with the product.

I have this same basic issue as all the folks on this thread. When insert a disc into the slot loaded DVD-RW on my Studio 1535 the disc will spin but the system won't read the disc. When I try to click on the drive, it spits the CD or DVD (I've tried both) and give me "Insert Disc" dialogue box. I've download and installed the latest driver for the optical drive (TSSTcorp one). This just happened today. This morning it was reading music CDs fine and just a few minutes later, it won't read them at all.

Dell! Help us all out! Is this just about faulty optical drives? That's the conclusion I'm coming to.

Here's the latest update on my saga.  I updated to the 8/09 driver and the drive seemed to work fine for about two weeks.  Then the entire drive vanished from the system.  Windows said the driver loaded, but the device couldn't be found.  I did find a solution to this on the Microsoft site when i search on the specific error code.  The drive came back, but Dell had already dispatched another drive.  They pulled out what I had and put in a Sony drive.  So far it has been fine.  My warranty expires in a few more days and I guess I'm just going to see what happens.  Dell told me that they would not extend my warranty or replace the drive with an external USB one.  If I continue to have problems on going to click on the "Unresolved Issue" link on the website and see what happens.

Chris, look at this, more Hybrid horror stories, when is Dell going to 'fess up and admit that the Studio Hybrid, though a noble attempt, was a little before it's time (and by that I mean was not ready to be released in the form it was)?

If it's any help to the forum users, I find that my DVD drive appears to be work better (i.e. more consistently) when the unit is in the horizontal position (seems gravity helps)

My optical drive has just decided it won't play ball at all, so there is no automatic "receiving" of the CD.  it's out of warranty so not sure how to go about fixing it.  But my comment is about the touch sensitive icon on the front - it has never really worked satisfactorily.  I love my hybrid, but the drive has frequently had me puzzled.

delldisasters,

Run the Dell Diagnostics to test the drive.  The Diagnostics should be on your hard drive.  Press F12 at startup while the blue Dell is on the screen.  This will take you to the boot menu where the Utility Partition or Diagnostics will be a choice.  Run the Custom Test for the drive and have a data CD (not music CD) in the drive for the read test.

i have a Dell all-in-one Studio One desk top computer. The disk drive will not eject the disk and does not recognize that it contains a disk. An error pops up which says "An Error occurred when ejecting removable disk "F". How do I correct this?

Hi Marieabaker,

Is there a button to eject the disc or are you using a command within Windows Explorer? One thing I would try is to boot to safe mode and see if the disc will eject.

Hi all I am having similar problems disc not being read. This is just music CDs; won't now eject. The only way I can disc out is by pushing the eject button on the front of unit beforeWindows starts up. Anyone any ideas how I resolve this as some of the posts on here are very old?

Hi jm1993,

You forgot to mention the model of your Dell. Is there a button to eject the disc or are you using a command within Windows Explorer? One thing I would try is to boot to safe mode and see if the disc will eject.
