I was having all sorts of mechnical issues with the HL-DL-ST slot loat that was in my XPS1340, constantly failing burns and something hitting the disc making it slow down make make mechanical ticking/scratching noises.
I had the drive replaced only to do the same thing again (video here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t7qr0ZNk1-4 )
This time when I called Dell they advised there was a new part number, tech was out today and I can see they are completely diffrent brands the new one is a TSSTcorp DVD+-RW TS-D633A D200 (ATA)
Its much quieter loading and doesnt appear to have any of the mehanical issues. Id personally call dell support and ask for a replacement.
in the attached image the old one is on the left and the new one on the right, as you can see, completely different.
I have had to replace the CD/DVD drive TWICE on my XPS 1640. I just got the machine last August! I am definiely NOT happy about this problem. Dell needs to look into this and come up with a solution, or I will be leaving the fold!
