Failed HDD in Inspiron 1501

My hdd has failed in my laptop and dell support is trying to tell me that it is a common problem that can be fixed and that the hdd has not actually failed, but because i am two weeks out of warranty i have to pay an extra 50 dollars on a laptop that is little over a year old. I have tried installing windows xp, windows 7, OpenSolarius, and ubuntu 8.10 on the hdd as well as access it in  an external enclosure but not successful in anything. Is anyone familiar with a problem like this. To me it seems that my hdd has failed

i should probably mention that i already let a bunch of tech nerds from IIT look at it and they agreed it was failed and that i should try to get a replacement from dell anyway since it is barely out of warranty and that a hdd should last longer

Sadly... out of warranty, is out of warranty... so you'll have to pay for a replacement drive yourself.

That's the chance you take, if you choose not to pay for an upgrade to the standard one year warranty :emotion-55:

yes i figured on that but what i was wondering is what could dell possibly do to fix it when they say it is a common problem

Dell has misinformed you....typically.

Do not buy the new hd form Dell it will be more expensive. Get one from Ebay, Newegg or Zipzoomfly.
