Precision 490 cpu upgrade 5xxx series processors

I purchased the Dell Precision 490 workstation with the understanding that I could upgrade its processor.  The Dell Precision 490 online manual says that the dell 490 is compatible with 5xxx series processors and uses the Intel 5000x chipset.   Intels website indicates that the 5000x chipset will support the 5400 family including the 5400 series chips that support the 1600fsb.

What processors in the 5xxx series can I utilize now, what bios level do I need for them.  Also when can I expect to be able to download a bios update that will allow my machine to use the newest 5xxx processors?

I am considering purchasing 2 x5272 3.4ghz quad core processors which operate at 1600mhz fsb  However, I do not see the option to change my bus speed to 1600mhz fsb.

Or the X5365 3ghz quad core at 1333MHZ fsb.

Since the Owners manual states that I can upgrade to any 5xxx intel processor and this workstation is only a little over a year old when can I expect to find a bios update that will allow me to use the greater x5400 processors or can i use them now?  Also how do i change my bus speed to 1600mhz fsb to support the e5462, e5472, x5472, x5482, x5492 and x5272 processors?

You can install "Up to two Matched Intel® Xeon® 64-bit processors "

They must be Matched pairs.  You cannot install different series.

Xeon®  5100/5300 series 64-bit only end of story.

BIOS SHOULD BE UPDATED BEFORE Trying Newer or Faster Processors.

The upgrade candidates are essentially the same as the 2006 Mac Pro Workstation.

5160 "Woodcrest" is ok  Manufacturer Part# : MW645  Dell Part# : 311-6138

DELL 3.0 GHz Second Processor for Dell Precision WorkStation 490 ...

53XX "CloverTown" is ok

Model Speed (GHz) L2 Cache (MB) FSB (MHz) TDP (W)
E5310 1.60 2x4 1066 80
L5310 1.60 2x4 1066 50
E5320 1.83 2x4 1066 80
L5320 1.83 2x4 1066 50
E5335 2.00 2x4 1333 80
L5335 2.00 2x4 1333 50
E5345 2.33 2x4 1333 80
X5355 2.66 2x4 1333 120
X5365 3.00 2x4 1333 120

E5450 "Harpertown" is not ever going to work.

The INTEL  5000x  chipset is why.

The Dell PrecisionTM  490 is equipped with up to two Dual or Quad-Core Intel®  Xeon®  5100/5300 series 64-bit processors for a total of up to eight execution cores in two sockets.

Intel Xeon
Dual-Core Intel®  Xeon®  5110 1.60GHz, 1066 FSB, 4M L2 Cache, 65 watts
Dual-Core Intel®  Xeon®  5120 1.86GHz, 1066 FSB, 4M L2 Cache 65 watts
Dual-Core Intel®  Xeon®  5130 2.0GHz, 1333 FSB, 4MB L2 Cache, 65 watts

Dual-Core Intel®  Xeon®  5150 2.66GHz, 1333 FSB, 4MB L2 Cache, 65 watts
Dual-Core Intel®  Xeon®  5160 3.0GHz, 1333 FSB, 4MB L2 Cache, 80 watts

As far as I am aware the 490 and 690 will not support 54xx or 52xx processors and cannot be configured to do so. Depending on the motherboard it may support 53xx quad cores but earlier models did not. Bob

I am running e5345 quad 2ghz single xeon.  I bought the workstation over a year ago with the intention of upgrading to two xeon quads of the 5xxx line that is what the manual said.  However, from what i have read people have experienced difficulty finding processors to upgrade too which work.  Since the Xeon processors in the case of this workstation cost more than most computers it would be nice if Dell would be kind enough to make it clear which processors will work and which ones will not work.

I totally understand the need for Dell to push the upgrade to the txxxx series workstation.   I purchased this workstation instead of a standard desktop since workstations tend to have a longer service life.

I have tried these CPUs...

1. 2x5355 OK

2.2x5410... cant even boot (Dell manual -- is EXTREMELY confusing as to CPU it supports? No BIOS updates from Dell to sort out the mess?

3.2x5240... havent tried yet...

Ndgoh,

Did your precision come factory with a dual core or a quad core? I read somewhere that there are two motherboard revisions. One that supports "Only' dual cores, and one that supports the quads.

Thanks!

I buy two X5365 3ghz quad core at 1333MHZ fsb from ebay and put them into the Dell 490 and they work, so I have eight core running at 3gHz and have a cpu mark 6378 rank 115 in multi-cpu PASSMARK....... wonderful

Hi,

What BIOS and Mobo model are you using?

Cannot get my 490 to "see" two processors running BIOS A08 in Win 7 Pro x64

Many thanks for your reply.

Hey, I have a precision 490, with a motherboard revision of a00, and bios a05. It has 2x xeon e5345, 2.33ghz quad  cores. I didn't think that the earlier motherboards supported the e53xx series, but for some reason mine does. Im thinking about upgrading to xeon x5355, because their $45 on amazon right now. Would this be ok forr my system? Thanks
