Enable mic playback on Inspiron 1501 (running XP)

I have an Inspiron 1501 running on Windows XP, and I'm trying to set up my Volume Control to include mic playback (which, as I understand it, is often disabled by default in the Sigmatel cards). I know that I did some editing in the registry with another computer I had (an Inspiron 6000) and it worked. However, this computer must use a different set of drivers... "DisableMicPlayback" does not appear in the registry, and I haven't been able to find any other registry editing suggestions. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Ethan

Jim:

Thanks for your reply! I've actually seen this page before, and I tried to run the registry fixes as described in instruction set 3. However, I ran into problems when I found that there was no "RecMonitorMute" key in my registry (although, I did find "EnableInputMonitor", "EnableIntSpkrMute" and "DigitalInputMonitor" and they were edited correctly). Do you know why the "RecMonitorMute" key would be missing?

Thanks,
Ethan

Your 6000 had AC97 audio and the 1501 has HD audio, and that is the difference. Try Instruction Set 3 in the thread How to Enable Input Monitoring. You probably have the current driver which is almost 2 years old, but if you have an older driver use Instruction Set 2.

I don't know why it is missing. Perhaps you do not have the current driver, or perhaps it needs to be reinstalled.

You could try to manually put in the key -- instructions for inserting an entry are in Instruction Set 4. It should look something like this, where you would fit in "RecMonitorMute" alphabetically. I'm not sure where I got this picture so don't take everything in it to mean your Registry should look exactly the same.

Ethan,

I did not mean that you should use Instruction Set 4, but that if you want to manually insert "RecMonitorMute" into your Registry there are directions for how to perform that type of procedure outlined within Instruction Set 4. It would be something like

In the right pane, right click and select New > Binary Value.
Type 'RecMonitorMute' without quotes and then press Enter.
Right click on the new name and select 'Modify'.
In the 'Value data' box, make the value 00, then click OK.
Exit the Registry and restart the computer.

Instruction set #4 doesn't work... None of the paths that they list line up with what's in my registry.

Here's what I'm looking at on my computer...

Thanks,
Ethan

I am pleased to report that, actually, that worked!

However, I am no unable to adjust the volume of the mic input, as the slider is grayed out, as pictured below...

Any suggestions?

Thanks for your continued help,
Ethan

Ethan, that is great. Sorry you don't have control over the volume but that is what I said would happen in the part of the instructions about configuring the system mixer. I agree that it is not a perfect solution but it was the best we could devise. You might be able to find some additional ideas at notebookforums.com.
