Inspiron 1545 touchpad performs poorly, driver issue?
I previously had an Inspiron B130 that had a Synaptics touchpad. I'm under the impression that this brand new Inspiron 1545 has an ALPS touchpad. I don't know if it makes any difference. Either way, the touchpad on the B130 using the Synaptics driver (from Synaptics, not Dell) worked MUCH better than the touchpad on the 1545 using Dell's driver.
My operating system is Windows Vista 64-bit. I've tried playing around with the Dell Touchpad settings to no avail. I'm tempted to install the Synaptics driver from Synaptics.com to see if it works better, but I haven't done that yet.
Anyone else notice this? Would the Synaptics driver work? Quite frankly, other than the fact that the special touchpad functions not working, the default Windows PS/2 driver worked better than the driver provided by Dell.

I read that the Synaptics driver works for some ALPS Electric touchpads. I tried it and it does NOT work with my Inspiron 1545. The special touchpad functions don't work with the Synaptics driver, much like using the standard Windows PS/2 driver.
So I guess I'm stuck with a poorly-performing touchpad (when compared to Synaptics)?
That's really poor. Had I known the ALPS touchpads were so lacking compared to the Synaptics I would have considered this before purchasing. I would have GLADLY paid more for a Synaptics touchpad if I had known the difference beforehand.

I read your post with interest. I am wondering if you had any luck with the driver for your 1545? I hate mines with a passion, simple tasks are like hard tasks to do anything. I would much like to hear from you if you have had any joy...Many Thanks!
