The Cyberlink site indicates that my software isn't compatible with their updates. The BD advisor they have indicates it is Power DVD DX 7.0(Dell) installed, but the version 7 updates are not compatible. The advisor also indicates that everything installed on my system including the software can play Bluray in both basic and advanced mode. So it's either a software (I'm thinking) or a hardware issue. The fact that I've played them before points to software, so I think I'll contact Cyberlink directly.
Thanks for the help. If you have any other recommendations, feel free.
Did you find a solution for the problem chris tm? I have the same problem with my Power DVD DX player. Every time I put a Blu Ray disk in I get: "A critical component of the Blu Ray player requires periodic updates. New movies could fail to play if the critical component is not updated promptly. The Update will be downloaded from the Internet, if an Internet connection is available, or you can request an update dis from Dell support." And when I try to update I get: "No update is currently available." I could play Blu Ray disks before. I have tried removing the program and loading it up again but it did not help.
I do not know if you now have your Power DVD software working or not at this time. If it is still giving you problems there could be several reasons.
1. You are using SP2 which is known to break links in the Registry used by Power DVD
2. SP2 does not migrate needed files from the SP1 version.
3. Create a Restore Point.
4. Download the trial Power DVD 9 from Cyberlink (don't buy it). A different option here is to get the Dell 8.xx version off the Dell web site or convince them to send you the disk.
5. Do not uninstall your existing Power DVD application unless you get a hold of the Dell version 8.xx.
6. By downloading the trial version it will fix the registry and add back in the missing files.
7. Now try starting your Power DVD and then put in the Blue Ray disk.
8. It should play. If this does not work then uninstall Power DVD 9 and try launching your Power DVD again. If still no go then fall back to the restore point you created and consider falling back to PS1

Hi, Chris:
The immediate problem can be solved by turning autoplay OFF for all DVD discs.
As for PowerDVD, try going to their download site and installing any updates manually.
