Dell order delays

I have ordered(1557, with Core i7 720QM) on 28th sep 2009, initial Estimated  delivery date was 8th Oct, it was changed on 6th to 15th Oct, and then o 13th again changed to 21st Oct without a intimation, I'm not sure whether Dell keeps their promise or on 23rd the Delivery date may be changed again it wont make me surprise. Atleast if Dell comes forward and lets the customer know the reasons for delay would definitely improve customer satisfaction, otherwise Dell will loose orders.

Yesterday I searched for "Dell Order delays", it seems every year for every  launched products  this is repeating.

It happens to EVERY manufacturer with every new model - the i7 CPU is in short supply worldwide.

If you need a system and can't wait - you can buy a pre-built system at retail.

this sounds like that it is customers' fault, we shouldn't order new models...

my xps is delayed as well, when I email my sales person for eta, he simply ignored my email, before ordering, he replys email within seconds...

I order a lot of computers electronics on line, it is rare to delay an order, doesn't matter the retailer is big or small, why took over one month to build a computer? I am wondering they are computer manufacturer or car manufacturer?

I thought it is possibly their strategy, advertise a low price, then delay the order, wait for price drop, first time buy Dell products, very dispointed with Dell, cannot believe they can grow this big

it's the same with me, I ordered the Laptop and delivery date keeps changing, Why they started taking order if they can't keep to their delivery dates !!! they really want to lose their customers !!!

When you need to order the chat is available instantly , when you are sick of their product or have not got it yet and waiting for it and delivery date keeps changing you have no chance to speak to any one to obtain the status and  Dell did not even bothered to write an e-mail to customer saying we are sorry that your order is delayed !!! they should compensate for this !!

I'm considering to cancel the order because I do not know when I will get the laptop.

I feel the growing pains over this issue, just as you all do. I ordered a Studio 17 with a 720 on October 2nd. My EDD seems like it was extended out of the box as it was November 9th. If I get a delay before that time, I will NEVER buy from dell again. I understand the mathematics of supply and demand, and how it's used to make a customer "wag his/her tail", but as the consumer we all have to learn when it's time to say no. The fact that Dell offered the i7 on 9/23 and couldn't deliver in a "realistic" time frame is almost criminal. I guarantee they still don't have these chips. Buckle up, its just now getting bumpy.

I ordered my Studio XPS 16 (2.8Ghz Core2Duo) on the 5th October and was given the EDD of the 19th... On the 15th this changed to the 2nd November!

What I don't understand is how it seams to be stuck in the "In Production" phase, when surely they would check stock etc in the "Pre-Production" phase.

This was the first order for my company from Dell, and we was thinking of replacing our entire network with Dell equipment, but if they cant handle one laptop order (or delaying it several times in some peoples cases) what are they going to be like with an order of 50+?

Did you by chance order it with a Core i7 CPU?  If so, that's the delay cause - Intel hasn't ramped production on the i7 yet and there's a worldwide shortage of the CPU.

If you order a Core 2 Duo CPU it will come much more quickly.  Or, just go and buy the system you want at retail.

Thought I would mention my wonderous Dell experiences with you all sharing my feelings.

Similarly to Craig, I ordered a Studio XPS 16 on 6th Oct, with an original EDD of 19th. Also on the 15th this changed, however to the 9th Nov - already longer than many people I have seen, and over a month from the order date.

I phoned Dell to essentially make them aware of my disgust at such a delay (I'm generally impatient when I start getting messed about) and the guy I spoke to simply didn't seem to care beyond saying he "felt sure it would be before then, because it shouldn't take that long to build a computer". I figured i'd just wait and see, and indeed, will see what next working week (19th-23rd) holds in store for my order progress.

My main problem is, how in this day and age when everything is recorded and computerised, such a thing cannot be EXACT. I don't actually have a problem with waiting a while when i am originally told it will be however long. I read other people's experiences with the EDD changing numerous times and I simply cannot fathom how this can even happen. You either have the parts, are waiting for them with a business eta, or are waiting for them to be manufactured - all of which should never summount to an additional 3 or so weeks delay on top.

Like Craig, my specification is also a Core2 Duo, and as per my above post, I seem to be experiencing even longer delays than those essentially waiting for Intel. I do not think there should be such problems for the Core2 units, so it would be reasonable to assume the delay for these systems is caused elsewhere.

The representative I spoke to from Dell during my call, was unable to give me any useful information at all, even when I attempted to acertain what part was causing the delay; he remained evasive and insistant that the order would almost certainly arrive before the revised 9th November EDD, and that it was an entirely computer controlled system, suggesting it may not be accurate... you don't say!

ejn63,

I disagree, I have not ordered the i7 CPU... I ordered the 2.8 Core2Duo on the 5th October, initial EDD was the 19th, but on the 15th that got delayed to the 2nd November...

I dont understand, why is this thread marked has "Accepted Solutions" Ive read through them and havent seen any solution. I'm waiting for a replacement machine after paying for 3 years warrenty and Ive already waited a month and my date has just been put to 17th November. I'm paying for premium support for a machine I dont even have. It has an AMD CPU so how does the I7 effect that? Ive been through hell with DELL and it looks like I'm going to have to try and get my money back because no way am I waiting another month. This isnt the only problem I'm having with DELL, in fact they have put me through hell and all I wanted was to buy a gaming machine but instead all Ive bought is months worth of problems, lies and deception.

Like others my specification is not a i7 CPU in my case is a Precision M6400 : Intel Core 2 Duo T9550(2,66GHz,1066MHz,6MB) and when talking with the sells person from DELL he mentioned something about a component of the screen, but regardless which component is out of stock I agreed with TW, DELL is a computer manufacturer it does not make croissant by hands and ran out butter at the last second! Changing the EDD every week delaying it for over a month just give doubts about their capacity of making a good computer and the worse is I still have not idea if I will get my computer 28th of October and I'm considering if I should cancel the order.

mykill100,

I have been thinking the same, and have been trying to find a way to "un-Accept the Solution" maybe the its something for the OP to do. I also have taken out the 3 year premium in house warranty, but now after this, and all of the comments on here (recently anyway) I am slowly regretting buying a Dell. Hopefully they can turn this around and save me... haha

The one I purchased was for mainly business use, and was required for a business trip early next month, however now it looks like the laptop isn't going to be here. Before anybody says why didn't you order it sooner, that was because when I spoke to Dell they said that it would take 10 business days.

Sorry, if I keep repeating myself, but come on Dell... Surely you check your own forums?

It seems the order delays are with all the products, as opposed to the core i7 processor shortage.

I think any Company (Big or small) ensures customer satisfaction at all the times, I feel Dell needs to realise before loosing all the orders. If Dell is clear on their issues and if they inform the customers that would create a good atmosphere and it increases the faith. Instead of changing the In Production Date and EDD every week. Its more like a playing a safe game. But this would definitely effect the Company's Global reputation. This issue is not specific to one place, we can see the  complaints from Australia, Japan, UK, US etc...

DELL Please realise the customer tensions and let the customer know the exact issues you are facing instead of keep on changing the EDD.
