Printer Problems "Prints" But Nothing On Paper

I have a Dell 922 Printer/Scanner/Copier. It is about 5 years old. I never had a problem until a few months ago. I was printing some papers. I had had my ink cartridges refilled at Walgreens. The printer does not recognize this so a box will pop up to tell me the cartridge is low on ink. I just click on Continue and tha paper will print. It gets kind of annoying. When the box popped up on this particular morning I noticed a tiny box and the words, Do Not Show This Box Again. I clicked the box. I haven't been able to print since, even though I had just printed several pages before I clicked this box. I have tried the following interventions:

1. uninstalled and reinstalled the printer

2. replaced the ink cartridges w/ both new and refilled cartridges that I know worked.

3. Unplugged the box in the back of the printer, waited, and plugged it in again to reset.

The printer will not scan or copy. The light goes on and it will make a copy but nothing is on the paper. If I try to scan it does nothing at all.Now the printer keeps telling me the cartridges are seated incorrectly or the cover is open. I am very frustrated! I cannot afford to buy a new printer!! Any help will be very appreciated. Thank You!!

kathyg2709,

Refilled Dell Series 5 ink cartridges might or might not work. The sensor in the ink cartridge is probably causing the problem. I would try using Dell Series 5 ink cartridges and see what happens. You should be able to copy a document under the glass with no problems. B&W and color. If you cannot do this, then the problem in in the printer, probably the cartridges.

Unplug the printer from the wall. Now remove the powerbrick for 60 seconds. This will reset any error message the printer is getting. Plug everything back in and power the printer on.

Open the printer with the power on and remove the Dell Series 5 black ink cartridge and make sure the tape is off the cartridge, then reseat the cartridge back in. Now do the same for the Dell Series 5 color cartridge. Now when you close the printer, it should print an alignment page. Any error messages?

Dell Series 5 ink cartridges have a sensor in them and cannot be refilled. Article on refilling Dell ink cartridges

They can be purchased at Staples, Walmart or Dell's website.

Black cartridge = black side(left side)               Color cartridge = color side(right side)

Photo cartridge = black side(left side)              Color cartridge = color side(right side)

It is also possible to get a new ink cartridge with a bad sensor. Please take it to the place of purchase for a replacement one.

Dear Rick,

Thank you for such a fast response.

By the powerbrick, I am assuming you mean the black box attached to the back of the printer. I have done this many times before. I have tried using refilled cartridges that I KNOW work, almost new cartridges that I KNOW  work (I decided to use up the refilled ones first) and two BRAND NEW cartridges. All are Series 5, all were purchased online through Dell and the tapes have all been removed.

I have repeated the process again today and used the two almost new cartridges that I know work. I did not get an alignment page. I repeated it again with the brand new cartridges. I did not get an alighment page. I tried printing out this page just to see what happens. I got a box with the message PRINTER CARTRIDE MISSING. I reseated the cartridges again and tried to print again. I get a box that says UNSUPPORTED CARTRIDGE. I have no idea what that means.

I really appreciate you trying to help with this, Rick. I just can't afford a new printer right now and would like to get this one going if you can. Do you think this has anything to do w/ that box I checked? That is the exact moment this happened. I had printed my daughter's homework. Then I tried to print another paper. That is when I checked the DO NOT SHOW THIS MESSAGE AGAIN. After that I could not print, scan or make copies. Thank you!!

kathyg2709,

Doesn't matter if the box is check. You can try the boxes but if the Dell Series 5 ink cartridge has a bad sensor, it will not work.

Start, control panel, printers, printer preferences, advanced more options. Look at the boxes.

I hear what your're saying, Rick. I could understand one or even two bad sensors, but not 6 all at the same time, especially if I am positive 4 of them worked before. I still think there has to be more going on. Thank you for all your help!
