Photo 964 driver - Vista 64 or Windows 7

I noticed in the printer FAQ that this printer is not currently supported for Windows 7.  Anyone have a workaround, or is this simply a delay until a driver is available?  Printer is less that 5 years old, so replacing it is not an option.

NickO79,

From me spending many housr here, and also having a Dell 964 Printer connected to a Dell Wireless Printer Adapter 3300 <ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell> I have helped many and also learned from others.

I think this information will help you get the printer working. Please leave me know how you make out.

Dell 964 printer Vista 64-bit drivers that work with Windows 7 instructions.

The R146813 Drivers mentioned are located HERE

Thanks for the reply.  I thought I was one step closer when I was able to reinstall it and get the green "default" checkmark, but then I was getting a message that the print spooler wasn't working. I checked the Windows Feature "Print & Document" section and LPD and LPR are checked, and now I'm back to a trouble state.  The only thing I can think of is that when I uninstalled I did not see an option to delete the drivers, but I assumed that the clean-up utility would have done that.  I'm brand new to Win 7 , so any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

NickO70,

You can try running the Vista 32-bit patch and it might cleanup the printer. It's kinda of hit and miss with the removal patch. Before restarting the computer also try looking at...

Manual Printer Driver Removal

Then install the drivers provided in the link. If you fail, then try posting the issue in THIS THREAD and hopefully Mo1ecu1e will reply back with more detailed instructions.

Windows 7 is supposed to be backward compatible and this might have something to do with it.

Well, I tried to follow the "manual driver removal" instructions but I don't see a "File" command or "Server".  I think PnP may be getting in the way; as soon as I plug in the USB cable Windows goes on a driver hunt and gets the old driver before the 146813 installs.  Is there another way (or Win7 friendly) way of removing the old driver? Your help is greatly appreciated!

NickO79,

Try running the patch, which is a cleanup Utility for the printer. If the patch does notwork, then manually remove the printer.

Restart your computer.

Do NOT connect the printer. Double click on the R146813. It will unzip and sit there. Now look for the setup.exe file, right click on it, then left click run as administrator. Personal installation if using USB Cable. Network if using a wireless print server or printer sharing. You'll get a prompt that the printer is not connected. At this time you connect the printer. You'll see the new hardware wizard working. Let the new hardware wizard work for a few minutes before proceeding through the rest of the setup.

Still no joy.  Here's what I've tried, maybe you can spot an issue.  Is thre a way to manually add the printer (the scanner is working but not the pirnter - and I still see the PnP indicator pop up whenever I plug in the USB cable).

Ran the patch. as administrator.  Printer/scanner still appeared in the Devices & Printers window.

Had to disconnect the USB cable to allow the printer/scanner to be removed.  Removed printer.

Rebooted.

Ran the 146813 setup as administrator with USB cable disconnected.  Connected when prompted, saw the little Windows "installing driver" bubble pop up before I could even click next; clicked next anyway.

Rebooted.

The 146813 install process ran and the scanner works but no luck with the printer.

I tried "Add a printer" to see if I could do this manually but of course no 964 in the options presented by Window, and wasn't sure where the file was to browse for it.

All your help is greatly appreciated, I can't believe how difficult this has been.

SUCCESS!!!  Thanks for sticking with me through this.  Changing to Compatibility mode evidently did the trick.

Hi.  I hope you are still helping people out with the Dell Photo printer 964.  My attempt to get it working with windows 7 was a disaster!

After running the cleanup patch R166225, some things changed like the Dell Dock icons at the top of my screen were removed.  I am worried about what that did to my system because I don't know what other changes occurred.  I took a very long time to run.  But at least the 964 stuff seemed to be all gone.

I downloaded R146183 and eventually was able to find a way to choose windows vista combatability mode.  However, there was never an installer option -- perhaps it had been automatically installed.  Each time I tried to open the file, I got a box that asked if it was ok to allow the program to make changes to my computer (yes).  I eventually plugged the printer back in to check if it would work and it did not.  So the printer got back into my system by me checking that out.

Would it do any good to try to start all over again?   I don't know how to make the installer option appear and I never got the prompt to plug in the printer so I tried it anyway.  I probably should not have tried this, but your instructions were so clear it seemed worth a shot!        Diane

diane555,

Using the instructions located at...

964 Photo All-In-One Printer owners thread (W7)

I posted the warning about the removal patch. These things can be installed after the printer installation is complete.

You need to disconnect the printer, run the patch(R166225)(Printer cleanup utility) until it prompts you to restart your computer.

Restart your computer. Make sure the printer is removed. Manual Printer Driver Removal

Go to start, control panel, system. Here is where you see what your operating system is. I did not give a link to R146183 and do not know what it is to.

R146813.exe is the Vista 64-bit drivers that work with Windows 7 64-bit systems. If you have Windows 7 32-bit, then you need to download The Vista 32-bit drivers(R146717.exe) The drivers need to be installed in the compatibility mode. Keep the printer disconnected until you get the message, the printer is not connected. Connect the printer at this time.

Right click on the drivers file, left click properties, left click compatibility. Change the compatibility to Vista. Then right click on the drivers, left click run as administrator.

***To install drivers, sometimes the file unzips and does nothing. You have to look for the setup.exe file, right click on it, then left click run as administrator***

Let me know what you need. The make and model of your computer and operating system are helpful.

hey Rick,

thanks for all your efforts to explain the installation....
I have tried hours and hours to get my Dell 964 working on my Windows 7 64bit ... the scanner works now but the printer does not
installing the whole thing on Windows 7 32 bit was a piece of cake, really easy, that´s from where I print out now (I have to keep changing operating systems)
I do delete all the Dell Drivers manually (uninstall) and then clean with the Clean up Utility (takes a long time each time) and the driver R146813 DOES start installing after the reboot and I DO install it in compatibility mode (Vista Service pack2 or 1) but it can only install the Scanner and not the Printer (error)..... I can scan but not print, and their is NO DRIVER listed in the device manager for the printer but a driver is listed for the Scanner something like Version 1.0.0.0.............

I have wasted to much time trying again and again but it´s more like a game now...
ANY IDEA WHAT ELSE I COULD DO?????????????????????
BTW: I have updated the firmware for my AIO Dell 964 to the newest one I could find which is A04 or Version 2.05, driver R133178

is the firmware of any importance?
should I change again to an older firmware??
any further Ideas from anyone appreciated!!!!!!!!
DON´T LET THIS BE unresolved;)
all I can think of now is to go buy a new printer with a working driver...

FELIX

Rick,

It finally worked!

I read your response right away, but a tree fell on my house.  So I ignored my printer problem for quite a while (a couple of months, in fact).

I had transposed the numbers when I did my post.  I did have the R146813 download.  I decided to start from scratch, running the cleanup utility again and doing everything very slowly.  I eventually figured out how to click on the set up file, following your suggestion, and got the process going, which was probably the thing that got me stuck the first time.  I do have the 64 bit operating system.

Both the printer and the scanner work, although they don't work with the Dell printer window (I have to print and scan through Windows 7 features).  I miss Microsoft Document Imaging, as with XP that allowed articles to be scanned and look like articles rather than snapshots of articles.  I am so happy to at least be able to print that I can now gear up for solving the problem of the scanned images!

I wanted to thank you so much for your help and willingness to troubleshoot.  If I can't make progress, I will certainly do another post and contact you.

It is so great to have people like you out there, and I appreciate that you have shared your valuable time.

Diane

Diane,

Sorry to hear about the issues you were having.

As for scanning, if you have the disk that came with the printer, then insert the Printer disk and stop it from running. Go to My Computer and double click on it. Look for the drive with the Dell disk in it. Right click on it, left click explore. Look for the OCR Folder. In the OCR Folder, there is an Abbyy Folder. right click on setup.exe, that's in the Abbyy Folder and left click run as administrator. This will install the OCR program.

Or

Try Simple OCR
