Dell Dimension Desktop won't load OS

Hi,

I'm posting this on behalf of my dad who has a two year old Dell Dimension desktop that's broken down.

Before I had a look at it, it wasn't getting past a boot up scan disk (stopping at something that said "Journal", which I've never seen before). After much to-ing and fro-ing with boot-up disks and Windows XP Recovery console, I eventually installed another XP on a new partition, did a thorough scan disk on C:, virus scanned etc etc and next time I booted it, the original installation came up fine. Carried out some maintenance and all was fine.

A week later, neither OS will boot up; in fact, the PC restarts everytime you select an OS in the boot menu. He seems to think the fans were not working, though I'm not sure that's true. He used a Dell diagnostic disk that threw up error code 4e0f:0240 if that means anything to anyone.

If at all possible, we need to salvage the main partition as this has photos, files etc. If anyone could shed any light on what might be up/poss solutions, then would be very grateful.

Cheers

Hi, Noopacity:

When you run the diagnostics, the error code is normally associated with a particular component. So run the diagnostics again but just on the hard drive and see what you get.

Also, it sounds as though he has data on that drive which has not been backed up. If that's the case, the priority should be to back up his important data first. You've already had one chance to do that.

Please post the model number, which can be found on the front of the computer.

Thanks Osprey. I'm really annoyed at myself for not backing up when we had it working. Guess I got complacent. I'll find out what the model number is.
