HDMI connections

The HDMI connection on the notebook doesn't carry audio - you need something like this:

What I wrote was that the HDMI on the _notebook _ does not carry audio - for indeed, it does not.  Yes, HDMI CAN be implemented to carry audio - on this notebook, it does not.  You must use a separate audio cable.

ejn63 might be thinking of DVI which does not carry audio. HDMI does carry audio to an HDMI tv. A lot of forum members have gotten it to work with their laptops but configuring it to work sometimes seems to require some luck.

First make sure to follow the connection steps as outlined in the Dell Technology Guide:
1 Turn off the computer and TV.
2 Connect the computer and TV.
3 Then turn the TV on. Adjust its setting to receive HDMI audio.
4 Next, turn on the computer to allow it to detect the connection to the TV.
5 Go to Start>Control Panel>Sound>Playback tab. Select the HDMI device as the default device. Click the Set Default button, and then click OK.

Next make sure you have the latest graphic driver, because the HDMI audio driver is part of the graphics'. You either have ATI or Intel graphics. Determine which, then go to the 1555 downloads page, expand the Video category, and check that you have the latest of your type.

Models with Intel Graphics

Look in the Device Manager and if you see "Audio device on high definition audio bus" with an exclamation mark, you need to update it. Right click on it and point the updater to the HDMI sub-folder in the Intel graphics card folder. The path will vary depending on the name of your graphics driver but should be something like:
C:\dell\drivers\R264626

There may be other configuration problems that I don't know about. I think it can be particularly difficult in Windows 7.

When you wrote "the" notebook, did you mean the 1555 in particular?

When I get a chance I will post links to some of the many posts here on the Laptop Audio Board from board members who do use the HDMI audio when connecting their laptops to their HDMI capable tv's, including the Studio 1555 .

Anyone have a Studio 1555 with HDMI audio that works?

gbrot said he has HDMI audio on a Studio 1555 with ATI graphics.
Bryan68426 explained how he configured his 1555 for HDMI audio.
Eskimo277 with a Studio 1735 said HDMI audio works with his tv in Vista, but trouble with 7.

Just those 6 threads have a couple of dozen forum members using HDMI audio when connecting their Dell laptops to their tv's. There are dozens of other similar threads throughout the Laptop Audio Board.

I bought those cables you suggested and it still has no sound. Any other suggestions??

While playing a Netflix or similar, plug headphones into the headphone jack of the computer. Do you hear the audio? If yes, then connect the computer  headphone jack to the tv by using the cables you bought. If there is no sound from the tv it cannot be the fault of the computer because you know it is sending out audio from the jack. Try configuring the tv to receive audio through its input jacks.

If you follow those steps and it still does not work then make sure you have the latest graphic driver, because the HDMI audio driver is part of the graphics'. Determine which type your computer has, then go to the 1555 downloads page, expand the Video category, and check that you have the latest of your type. If you don't have the latest one then download and install it.

I already posted links to 2 dozen suggestions from other people like yourself who were having problems with the HDMI audio and how they got it to work. I would read those solutions and try them, starting with the tips for the 1555 in the thread

thanks for the help I was able to see video and audio through my hdmi cable from laptop to TV

I would like to add that people have mistaken ATI high  definition audio device to be sound device to be played in your computer and you will notice "not plugged in"  when not connected to tv via hdmi cable

ati high definition audio device and the hdmi output in laptop is as interface where you can play mediafiles and get tranferred to TV which is hdmi compatible(insert hdmi IN) via hdmi cable

if follow steps outlined by jimo ati definition audio device gets automatically configred
