I can't remove my Dell Optiplex GX620 fan/housing assy.

Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4

I have a GX620 with a mini tower case, and am having trouble removing the fan/housing assembly, abbreviated p/n H9073.

I rotated the heat sink away from the fan housing and released a tab on the left (hard drive) side. The left side seems free, so looked at the right (floppy and CD) side. There appears to be a tab on the bottom (computer on it's side).  There is barely enough space to touch the tab with my fingers, so I used an offset screwdriver clamped with a Vice Grip to raise it.  Pushing it down didn't work either.  I tried looking at the area with an inspection mirror, but space is limited. I slid a piece of folded paper across the tab, and met some resistance, so think the tab is used to secure the housing.  It would be nice to remove the other side to look at the tab, but it appears to be fixed in place

Before breaking the tab by moving it too far, thought I would ask.

I wonder if Dell still provides repair parts for these older computers?  I kept getting switched to parts and accessories, which seems to be just upgrades (more RAM, etc).  I finally went to Discount Electronics, where parts are clearly identified.

Thanks, Jim

Why do you want to remove the fan?

Dell Optiplex GX620 - Documentation

Mini Tower Computer - Documentation

Removing the Processor

  1. Follow the procedures in "Before You Begin."

  2. Loosen the captive screw on each side of the heat sink assembly.

CAUTION: Despite having a plastic shield, the heat sink assembly may be very hot during normal operation. Be sure that it has had sufficient time to cool before you touch it.

  1. Rotate the heat sink assembly upward, and remove it from the computer.

Thanks for your answer. You provided the information I need.   I need to replace the fan because it is noisy.   It’s not the fan at high speed blowing sound; it’s more like a buzz or whine.   It's not the cabinet vibrating.  Interestingly, I can rotate the blades with my finger or by using canned air, and it seems to work fine.   Other than forces caused by the magnets, I can’t feel any resistance and it doesn’t slow down immediately.
I wondered how I missed the information you provided, so I checked again.   I still can’t find any info on the fan.   If I click on the Mini Tower Computer -Documentation link listed in your email, I get

<ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed / replaced from this post by Dell>

A table of contents is listed.   Fan isn’t listed.  If I go to the Mini Tower Computer section and click on Processor, I get

The Processor paragraph is displayed, where I’m told to swing the heat sink assembly upward, open the processor cover, and remove microprocessor.   Installation follows, covering these steps in reverse order. Nothing is said about removing the fan assembly.
Could you give me the link that covers the instructions listed in your email?

Jim

The picture Linked is for the Dimension 5100.

The Fan is not the same exactly but the mechanical setup is.

I own Several Dells GX620 being one of them.

There are 2 tabs the big one on one side needs to be pressed after taking out the heatsink.

The Processor does not need to be removed.
