Yes!! that was the software problem - I disabled ``demo mode`` in ATI catalyst and the red line disappeared.
May I take this opportunity to ask if you know the solution to this problem `` AC adapter plug for this XPS 16 laptop is loose and keeps dropping off constantly.``

Hi Sureshmysore,
Go into your Catalyst Control Center settings, and see if in video settings there is a setting for "Demo Mode". If so, disable it.
