You didn't say what version of Roxio you have, I'm guessing it's 5.  If it is ECDC 5 or ECDC 5 Platinum you can install it on XP and it'll work fine, but do the custom install and do not install TakeTwo and download and install the latest update BEFORE you reboot. (ecdc_v5.3.5.10_plt_enu.exe) it's a big one if your on dialup 18.3MB  http://www.roxio.com/en/support/ecdc/software_updatesv5.jhtml

If you have the OEM Roxio version from Dell you can download a update from Dell's download site, not sure if the update on Roxio's site is for OEM versions.

Nero 6 is by far the superior software package in my opinion. Even if you have the latest store bought Nero CD, chances are the website still has a newer version.  http://www.nero.com/us/nero-up.php   the update has 4 parts but you may only need to install the first 2 depending on what you have installed already.

Thanks for these. I have the OEM version and will try the download. Also the ones for Nero (I have version 5).

I can write to the CD using XP Pro's built in CD writer (which is based on the Roxio software) which is why I can't understand why it is that Nero 5 recognises the drive but just doesn't write to it even though it is saying that is has

Thanks again

Hi Jim

Thanks for this. The history is -

Had XP-Home installed but the drive would not write so Dell advised to install the firmware upgrade. This solved the problem and I could write cd's with Nero 5.5 with ease.

My machine then got infected with a Trojan (Norton failed to spot it) and my machine was trashed. Fortunately, I thought, I had backed everything backed up onto CDs. Unfortunately, I was wrong. Not all the CDs had burnt anything onto them (when you look at the back you can see that they are still pristine).

I used Partition Magic to zap my old drive partitions and took the opportunity to upgrade to XP-Pro.

XP will write to the blank CDs but, when I reinstalled Nero 5.5, nothing is written to a cd using Nero. I've removed and reinstalled the drivers, checked that the firmware is still the latest but still can't use Nero to write to CDs (at least with Nero I knew that the cd would be readable on any other machine but I'm not sure about XP's write software - it's based on Roxio and that was definately unstable).

That's my sorry tale so far, so if you could help I would owe you a pint or two of real English ale

Bob: CD Roller and ISO Buster are two recovery programs that offer a trial download version.

You should use one to confirm that the disks either do or do not have your data on them. If they do, either should be able to extract it.

FYI: XP's burning produces a Data CD in Sessions. You can add more to a CD but you cannot alter previous data.

You have never said how you wrote or are attempting to write the media. The fact that XP can write it indicates all is well. However throwing various software at it, always a bad idea, may have messed up things that will require some severe clean up.

Still no joy. I've downloaded the latest upgrade for Nero but I still cannot burn anything to the CD other than through Windows built in tool. This means that I cannot create a multi-session cd for backups etc.

What is even worse is that I burnt a cd of ir-replaceable photo's prior to my system going down and then found that it hadn't actually burnt anything (although at the time Nero reported 700Mb of files copied and they showed in a window).

I had a similar problem when I first got the machine and downloading the firmware upgrade worked but, as I already have the latest firmware installed, I have no-idea what to do. The machine is just 6 months old and I'm beginning to wish I'd just upgraded my old one (seperate CD-RW & DVD drives) as that is still going strong!

I am more confused than ever, so I will pass on the ale…

Nero can write in three separate ways with some variations within each so I still have no idea how you wrote them. It isn't too important, as the goal here is 1. To recover your data. 2. Get you writing again.

I have given you two suggested programs to recover. Let us know how that works.

Writing with Nero is not something I do, so I cannot be of assistance there.

XPs writer? Never heard of any problem whatsoever. The only thing I have never been able to do with it, is import sessions into Roxio to add data. Only tried it on V6 and haven't tried it in V7 yet. I seem to recall others reporting similar results in Nero.

Thanks Jim

I'll give the programs a try but I'm not holding out too much hope as I've tried the CDs in other machines and they're all reporting them as blanks.

Looks like I might have to stick with the XP Writer.

Thanks again

It's hair pulling time .

I uninstalled Nero completely and even checked the Registry to ensure all references were removed, then rebooted. Now even XP-Pro will not write to a blank CD. It goes through the routine ok but the disc is blank when loaded into another machine. XP shows that it is full so will not allow another re-write attempt.

Aaaaaargh, come on Dell, someone there must have an answer
