XPS Studio 16 (1645), Expresscard system lockup with RME Hammerfall
Hi!
I have a problem with the Expresscard slot on my relatively new laptop. I'd have reported it here sooner, but I couldn't access the forum...
For reference, I've already had a discussion with RME on their forum:
http://www.rme-audio.de/forum/viewtopic.php?id=8365
They claim it's a BIOS problem on this model.
My work laptop (Latitude E6500) works fine (same OS), whereas my XPS doesn't.
So...
If I have my RME Expresscard installed before boot, it never gets recognised in Windows (64 bit Win 7 Home Premium). If I then remove and re-insert, Windows freezes. If I remove it, Windows unfreezes. If I shut-down Windows with the card inserted (presuming I haven't frozen Windows), the laptop won't actually turn off all the lights and properly stop until I remove the card.
If I start Windows with the card not-inserted, but then insert it once Windows has booted, I can then get it recognised and the system runs OK.
It appears there's something strange going on at BIOS level (currently using A10) at boot time.
RME are blaming the BIOS and claim there's little to no chance of getting Dell to address the issue. Lenovo apparently fixed this (possibly same issue) by adding an option to their BIOS to disable Expresscard power saving.
Any thoughts / ideas on the subject would be gratefully recieved.
Thanks!
Chris

For reference, here's how Lenovo dealt with (what sounds like) the same issue on their systems:

Anyone have contact details for a useful person at Dell I could talk to?
Thanks!

I have basically the same problem.
I purchased a Dell Studio 1558 about two weeks ago. I wanted this machine for its PCIe slot and to run one windows based music program on it.
I had a RME multiface soundcard that worked with a PCI card but RME offered a PCIe card (called HDSPe Express Card) that would make my old sound card a viable solution.
The PCIe express card came today and now I found out not all PCIe slots are made to the same specs. The HDSPe Express Card would not even be recognized by Win 7, 64 Home.
Dell do you know of a way to do a work around to make this card compatible? RME is claiming it is a BIOS problem. There is also rumors that Dell did not put a standard specification PCIe card slot in these computers.

Here is how another computer company solved the problem:
They updated the BIOS:
We have experienced this problem on two Lenovo X200 with both MADIface and ExpressCard.
The solution is a BIOS update. The latest BIOS offers the possibility to disable the PCI Express power management.
Both cards work well now.

This may help Dell to find a solution too.

I wish I read this earlier! My brand new Dell m660 freezes when I connect the RME Expresscard and unfreezes when I disconnect. It just doesn't work. It seems to be a compatibility issue. Between the two units I am out $2000! Has anyone found a solution?
