Inconsistent sound with different apps

Have an older Dell desktop Dimension 4300 running XP with desktop stereo speakers and when I listen to music via Windows Media Player everything sounds like it should. When I play the same music file through the Zune software or I play music off of an online service like Last.FM it sounds like the voice is muted, almost like it is playing in 3 channel and the center speaker is missing. Any ideas?
