Error Code 2000-0142, indicates a failing/failed hard drive and you need to replace it, as this is new Laptop, for a replacement hard drive, contact Dell's Technical Support and give them the error message.

Could be a bad hard drive was installed?

If Dell, or a repair shop replaced the hard drive, best to contact them about the issue ASAP.

I am going through this same nightmare. Now this is a primary hard drive and a new replacement is on the way. Though, I don't trust mechanical drives at all. Especially, Seagate ones.. They are the WORST!! I have been bitten once where my 1.5TB External Seagate portable drive failed. It was damaged to a point that the platters where scratched really bad.

I have True Image 2013 and tried to take full backup, it fails half-way. I am very nervous as this is my work machine and cannot afford to lose the data. I am still debating whether to go with SSD or to use the replacement drive sent by Dell.

Any suggestions on what I should do?

Best Regards,

Use the Dell replacement hard drive

You need to clone/backup a hard drive, when it's not failing.

Personally, I clone/image the HD's of all our systems weekly, as a hard drive can fail at any time, often without a warning/error message.

If you have a desktop, after installing the new SATA hard drive and reloaded windows, you could install the failed hard drive as the secondary and see if you can recover the files and folders to the new drive, a SATA data cable would be required for this.

You could also attach the failed hard drive to another working system using an USB adaptor similar to THIS and see if you can transfer the files and folders.

Note: Only files and folders can recovered, all programs and applications must be reinstalled from their discs, or downloaded from the publisher's website.

Bev,

Appreciate your quick response. I received my replacement hard drive today.

During my further investigation, I also found that I can use Apricorn EZ Upgrade Kit (similar to one you suggested) will also work. Here is what I am planning to do:

  1. Attach the replacement drive using the Apricorn cable (mentioned above)
  2. Try to clone it first because it looks like my data is in good shape (yet)

Try to boot from the replacement drive and see if it works

If above steps fails then I will do the following
Install Windows 7 Professional on this drive
Transfer all the application over

Will post updates once I have it all working

Thanks

Hope you have good luck with recovering the files and folders.

Looking forward to the updates.

I have the same model and issue with my hard drive. Everything was working fine, then I started the computer and got "Disk-read error press ctrl+alt+del to restart". Went into diagnostic, doesn't see a hard drive, calls it disk 0 and fails HDD test with error code 2000-0142.

Here's the catch, if I remove the hard drive from the laptop and fit it into an external housing, it reads in my other laptop just fine!!! Everything is there, no clicking, no problems at all. No registry errors, etc. I defraged, ran diag, nothing comes up at all!!! What the hell? If my other laptop is seeing no issues and I have full access to all files, why is there an error?

The drive can be readable in another system but not bootable if the damage to the drive is in the boot sector.

This is a hardware problem with the drive - it needs to be replaced.

I bought a Dell laptop which usually starts at delay time but note down the spec is i5 4th generation. When I contacted the support they said it is software problem. But nothing worked out. But it was working fine, only delay startup. As of now it couldn't open properly, ERROR: 2000-0142 HARD DRIVE ISSUE. I have been using HP for a longer period no such issues. So now I have to replace it out of my own moey, I seriously suspect there is issue in hard disk from the start of the buying of the laptop.  I'm no so happy with this kind of issues in my laptop.

i know this is a lot too late , but i've been using my 6430 forever never had this kind of an issue. So my laptop powers on , but without display for about 4-5min then it powers down and reboots properly. Every-time i reboot this is what i have to endure a "forever boot process". All of this started when i borrowed my laptop to my kid , and she has no idea "so she says" what happened she claims she shutdown via power button and everything was fine. My HDD is fine ran all test you can run to check HDD health (using resscuzella , hrens , systemrecuecd , and even bios diagnostics ) still i get a boot process that leaves a lot to be desired.

So is this a bios problem or some kind of hardware issue
