Drives seems to be fine. After I did another pc checkup from dell, then checked info it just says it might no be enabled in the bios.Apperantly Dell techs dont know that, and I wouldnt know to enable or if it has to be enabled
These are tests related to your hard drive and probably cannot run while the drive is active. If you suspect a drive problem, you should run the Dell diagnostics from your Dell drivers and utilities disc.
I just found out that Dell Techs are working on a fix for the Dell support Center (PC Checkup). There is problem with the sofware and they will have a fix soon.
My xps 8300 is doing the exact same thing and after i click on detailed info button after the scan is complete it says smart is not enabled for this drive.
the model # is seagate st31000528as
other hdd info like min max temp and # of hours run etc is showing up in system info panel ok just the scan that "cannot run"
Seems kind of pointless for dell to have a monthly scan scheduled and to recommend leaving it turned on if you try to disable the scheduled scan if they don't have the necessary features enabled in the hardware for the scan to complete sucessfully, especially for people who may not know a lot about computers it would be worrying for them.
As it stands now with an atuo scan run and a manual scan run the home tab for the hardware scan is showing up as "A test could not be run"
Edit: and just some extra info I had my external 1.5 tb WD HDD usb 2 plugged in at the time (used to back up stuff) and the scan included it by default and all the Smart tests that "could not run" on the internal HDD ran and passed with a green tick on it!
I've got an XPS 8300 with SMART tests that "cannot run" as well. The person I contacted at Dell technical support claims there is no problem with Dell support Center. He suggested that I change my hard drive to start with but I'm fairly certain this is some kind of software / firmware glitch. Within Dell Support Center if I click on detailed system information and the "hard drive" I can see data from the last hardware scan such as temperature info for the drive etc. All looks normal. Under SMART attributes I see how many hours the drive has been used and some stuff on the number of reallocations, errors all of which is zero which I assume is good.
Does anyone know of a fix for this since it is rather worrying that these tests don't run ? I've been advised to uninstall and then re-install Dell support Center but I can't believe that will fix it.
I am also having this issue whenever I run the Dell Support Center software, all other tests are passed except the SMART threshold which have Can not run as their status results
Did the Dell Techs ever fix this issue or did anyone figure out a solution? I got my 8300 about a week ago and it has had the exact same 3 cannot run SMART Tests right out of the box. Not really a problem... its just annoying.
Ok I finally found a solutions for this problem: I will copy it here. I followd the instructions and now the scan work perfectly. you dont have to go into bios as suggested. Just download and run it.
Please note that this is not a HDD failure. This just means that ?SMART? is disabled on the drive and to run the test, please update IRST driver. This failure seems to occur only if system is using the Intel storage driver version 10.0.0.1046, release date:9-13-2010.
Updating IRST driver, will enable ?SMART? and allow PCDr to test the HDD. The link for the driver is given below:
it did the trick for me too! updating the IRST driver finally allowed pc doctor to "pass" my xps 8300. i was pulling my hair out trying to find a fix... thank you so much tazny!

You could boot to the BIOS and see if SMART monitoring is enabled.
