Hi Waytogt,

It would seem your hard drive had failed. Do you want to bring it into a local shop for replacement, or are you up to doing this yourself?

Whether you can save the data depends on how bad the drive is.

Please don't post in ALL CAPS. That is considered shouting.

Ok, your system takes an SATA type drive, 2.5". This is a standard hard drive for laptops, so they are not terribly expensive, under $100 for a 300-500GB drive. You would follow these instructions to install it. Then you would need to install Windows XP and device drivers as show in these instructions.

Now, as for your old drive, what you can try is buying a USB external enclosure for an SATA 2.5" notebook hard drive. Put your old drive in it and see if you can access the files.

Thanks for the information. I still could use some advise on the replacement specs. Is a SATA II a compatible replacement. Any advice on a replacement would greatly be appreciated.

Just ignore the spam in the previous post.

Yes, an SATA 3Gb/s (aka, SATA II) should be backward compatible.

Do you have your original Windows reinstallation and Dell drivers discs? If not, you can go here to order replacement discs.
