Network Connection Not Found (Dimension XPS 410)

I am having a problem connecting my desktop to my network.  Until yesterday, my desktop was working fine and was connected to the internet.  I installed a netgear wireless router for my laptop and now I have no connection to the desktop any longer.  Both the laptop and desktop are running Windows Vista.  I know the cable is good, because I plugged it into the Laptop before the wireless was hooked up and the internet came up fine.  Before I lost connection to the internet on my desktop, the Comcast tech had me reset the modem, then the router and restart my computer.  This is when I lost the connection to the network on my desktop.  He was able to get me up and running on the wireless laptop, but had no luck to re establish the desktop connection.  My question is did this reset something in my computer, and do I have to reconfigure something to regain the network connection?  The tech says it is the Ethernet connection, but it was working fine before the reset, so I beg to differ.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.

The technician hooked it up before for me.  But yes, you are correct, I am not getting an ip address for the desktop connection.  What does this mean?

Before you hooked up the router how were you connect on the desktop to the  modem? My guess is your either not pulling an IP address from the router for your desktop.

This could also be a MAC address issue.  You might need to go into your router setup and find the area where you can clone the MAC address. What is model of your router

The obtain IP address is checked.

I havent made any changes to my anti virus and the internet was working a few days ago, so I can believe this would be the cause of the problem.

I did diagnose and received this error message:

The network adapter "local area connection" is not currently configured to use the IP protocol.

I am thinking that perhaps your computers MAC address is not recognized by Comcast. Either that or your firewall/antivirus is blocking your connection.

Open Network and sharing center. Click on change adapter settings. Then click on the Internet Protocol IPV4 then click on the properties button.

make sure the Obtain IP address automatically is checked

It is a Net Gear N150 WNR1000 v2 Router.

Go HERE and get your USER MANUAL.

Go the section titled Logging in to your Wireless router.

once logged in go to the basic setup ..at the bottom of the basic setup screen  click on the button USE Computer Mac Address. Click on apply.

The router will most likely reboot and hopefully it will then connect you to the net..

Look in Device manager at the adapter listing. Is there any bangs next to it?

Next step boot the computer into Safe Mode with Network support. Tap the F8 key as soon as you see the Dell splash screen at  boot up.

So we ended up uninstalling the Ethernet, replacing the driver and reinstalling it.  That solved the problem of getting connected to the network on my desktop.  The driver must have gone bad.

Now I am back to where I was in the beginning.  I have Desktop internet and Wireless internet to the laptop.  But my connection has to be open (unsecure w/o password protection) to work on the laptop.  Once I secure it with a password, the connection becomes unidentified to the laptop and I cannot get the internet up.  But the connection to the desktop is still fine.  I don't understand this at all.  It shows an excellent signal strength.  We tested the password by cell phone on Wi-Fi and we were able to gain access on the cell phone through a secured network.  So we have narrowed it down to a laptop problem.  Any ideas what this issue could be? :emotion-7:

Make sure all your wireless settings on the laptop adapter match exactly the settings that are in the router. For  a "N"  connection you should be using WPA or WPA2 with  AES

The Laptop is about 4-5 years old, so I am not sure it has an "n" connection setting.  I think it has a "b" and "g" setting.

OK i mentioned N because your router is a N router.  Do you know what your wireless settings are in the router?  For G which is what you should be using the only difference would be to set it  to TKIP or AES
