Is the drive correctly identified in bios?
Depending on how old your system is, I'm wondering if the motherboard battery needs replacing.

Also, how do know its identified properly in bios?
I have a Dell XPS 600 with Windows 7, its about 4 years old

Thanks, got it working properly. Apparently it was looking for two other drives that didn't exist, I turned thos off and now starts up normally. Thanks again.
Just boot to the BIOS (F2) and see if your drive is listed there.
