Cloning boot drive on XPS720
Hi folks. Apologies if this has already been answered - I cannot see a response from initial looking.
Anyway, I have an XPS720 which is running well - other than 4 replacement nVidia video cards needed whilst under warranty.
My boot drive is a 750GB Seagate, with the usual hidden 47GB EISA partition, a 10GB recovery partition and the boot drive.
I am planning to move the whole drive from the 750GB to a faster 1.5TB drive, and have used CASPER to clone the disk.
However, when I try to boot from the cloned drive, it tells me there is no operating system installed. I am using DualBoot pro to control the selection of the O/S.
I can already dual boot into Vista Ultimate 32-bit, and Windows-7 Home 64-bit, and now want to move the Vista drive, not do a re-image.
So - my question is what is needed to be done to clone the entire boot drive, and then use the newly cloned image as the primary boot disk? I am sure this must have been resolved already?

I recommend you use Acronis True Image to clone your drive. If your new new drive is a Western Digital, download the Western Digital version of Acronis True Image from Western Digital: http://support.wdc.com/product/downloaddetail.asp?swid=119
If your new drive is a Maxtor drive use Maxblast 5 which is also powered by Acronis. For Seagate and Maxtor drives you can use Seagate's DiscWizard: Maxblast 5 and DiscWizard are available here:

A good, free for private use cloning program is DriveImageXML. It is available here: http://www.runtime.org/driveimage-xml.htm I just used it yesterday to clone a Samsung drive to an IBM DriveStar.

I used Acronis to clone my 500gig drive to my Raptor.no problems booted righted up

Hi Dave,
Problem solved.
Disk needs to be in same physical position as original - Dell systems need the EISA partition to be on the Disk 0 LUN 0 position......

Hi Tony - thanks for the response.
Casper has proved reliable until now, so I was wondering what was going on.
Problem has been fixed.
The Dell system needs any cloned drive to be in the same physical location as the removed drive.
E.g. it was expecting to see a boot drive as disk 0 on LUN 0, and I has it as disk 3 on LUN 1.
It didn't matter that the system dual-booted, DELL systems need to see the EISA partition in the same logical address as when it left the factory.

Yep. You cloned an original Dell system, therefore your boot.ini has the default Windows OS on Disk 0, Partition 2. In Davet50's case his boot.ini would have the default Windows OS at Disk 0, partition 1.

I agree it needs to be on SATA port 0, but the ESIA partition does not need to be there. My current drive has none and it was cloned from my original Vista drive which also did not have the ESIA partition. That happened after my original factory harddrive gave up the ghost and i had to do a complete reinstall on a brand new drive.
