Hi Mike,

If you boot right to the BIOS (F2), does the drive open then? If not, what if you boot to safe mode?

Hi Osprey

The problem actually occurs _before_ the BIOS screen comes up. In other words, I press the power button, then (assuming I've shoved it in before), the CD tray comes out, then the BIOS screen comes up. I've tried pushing the CD tray in at this stage, but it comes out again as Windows is coming up - including in Safe (F8) Mode.

So, I'm stuck. The the driver is up-to-date, and the fault occurs regardless of Boot process or Windows mode. The only other hint I can give is that the drive worked OK before I went away on 8 February, but didn't work OK when I came back on 17 April.

Any suggestions gratefully received!

Mike

Mike,

Try unplugging and reconnecting both the power and data cables. I've seen this happen with loose connections in IDE drives, so maybe that's what happened.

Now here's a funny thing Osprey. I thought of that yesterday, that it might have become a "dry" connection after two months' lay-off. I tried it a couple of times. It didn't work.

But when I booted the PC this morning, lo and behold the CD ROM drive tray stayed "in", and when I tried it out, I found that it was working normally again...

So, problem solved - for now, because I have no idea what was wrong or how we fixed it! No matter, it works, so now I will apply Mike's fundamental law of computing - "if it works leave it alone".

Thanks!

Mike

Ok, good to hear. Keep the connections idea in mind should the problem recur.
