Flashplayer update installs Google Chrome
When I updated Flash Player today on my XP system, it installed (without asking) Google Chrome. As I allow no Google software on my systems, I immediately uninstalled it. Interestingly, this unwanted piggyback did not install with FP on my Windows 7 system.
However I found this:
"Adobe Flash is directly integrated with Google Chrome and enabled by default. Any available updates for Adobe Flash are automatically included in Google Chrome system updates." http://www.google.com/support/chrome/bin/answer.py?answer=108086
It never ceases to amaze me how stuff tries to sneak into one's system.

Joe,
I'm not sure how you went about updating Flash... whether you did on "online" update, or whether you downloaded the installers, or some other means. I use the following direct links:
UNinstaller for older versions: uninstall_flash_player.exe
activeX version [ Flash10v.ocx ] for IE http://fpdownload.ma...h_player_ax.exe
plug-in version for other browsers http://fpdownload.ma...lash_player.exe
As far as I know, these don't offer anything extraneous.

As for the quote you copied/pasted from Google, I believe you misinterpreted it. What it's saying is that when you install [and/or update] Google Chrome, it (unlike IE/FF/Opera) automatically includes the latest proprietary version of Flash Player [so there's no need to separately install Flash into Chrome]. It is NOT asserting the opposite: indeed, one SHOULD be able to install Flash (ActiveX, or plug-in version... either only one , or both, as you deem fit) onto one's system, without it including Chrome.

I downloaded and installed my latest FP as per Bugbatter's link yesterday from here:
http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/otherversions/
As for my quote from Google, I included it only for information, and gave no interpretation to it. I suspect your read on it is correct.
But the fact remains that Google Chrome was foisted on my XP system by adobe. In the future, I will use your links to update flashplayer.

I did get to download the file from BB´s link (the one you used), but the name and version of the file did not seem right, well at least what I am used to.
Install_flashplayer10ax_gtbd_aih.exe Version 3.0.4.0 720 KB
I new it was an installer, and even though was BB´s link I did not take the chance because I was looking for v. 10.3.183.5 so I decided to go to the Flash Player web page (David´s link) with no Google Chrome offered.

It worked for me for both browsers, and confirmed afterward on the Flash Version Test page.. However, one of them did have Chrome checked by default on the Firefox download for one OS. I unchecked it. Something from McAfee was checked by default when I updated the other computer. Again that was for the FF download. In both cases I was able to uncheck them, but I had to scroll down a bit to see what those were -- very sneaky IMO.

perhaps that explains why Joe didn't see it...
in any event, I believe the (alternative) direct links I cited above are all "clean" of piggy-backed add-ons.

on a related (but tangential) note, I see that Flash 11 is at the beta stage... guess that means it won't be too long until we have to "upgrade" to that one...
