Hi Motch,
I would suggest you use Dell`s article to "Clear the NVRAM" and Microsoft`s article to re-load the Secondary IDE channel. Click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 11, article 2 for the former and Section 20, article 3 for the latter.
Also double check that you still have DMA enabled for the drive, Section 15, articles 14 & 13 of the same CD/RW link.

Best Regards

God, grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway,
the good fortune to run into the ones I do and the eyesight to tell the
difference.

Hi there. I have the OEM version of the drive you are having problems with. I had a minor set up problem with my DVD burner when I first went to install it, the cicumstances may apply to your situation. Make sure you uninstall the drive(s) before proceeding. This is the point where you should have cleared your NVRAM. Next you should shut the system down and unplug the system, following the user manual's instructions to ground yourself, etc.

I had to install my burner as the master and my DVD-ROM as the slave. I tried the cable -select set up and the drives wouldn't work properly. You have to change the plastic jumper clips on the back of the drives to the master and slave pins. Make sure the cable connecter closest to the motherboard is plugged into the drive you have as master. I had to have my burner as the master to get it to work properly. If you have more than one drive, install them one at a time, using the above instructions (except you don't have to clear the NVRAM twice).

Reboot the system and Windows should locate and install the drive you just installed. I installed my two drives in the manner (both are Sonys) and haven't had one problem. I don't use Roxio. I had too many problems with it when I was using a CD burner. Use the bundle that came with your burner, I did and it works fine. Roxio isn't worth the space it takes up on your hard drive.

I hope this helps. By the way, post your system specs next time for the best and quickest help.

I don't recall the exact setting, but there is one in Alcohol 120 that causes malfunctions in all other software…

I have had my drives set with the Sony as master, but at the end of the cable. I was under the impression that this was the correct way to set the drives (with the Master and the end of the cable not connected closest to the motherboard).

In anycase it worked fine where it was at for awile. Now it doesn't again

Computer Specs:

Audigy 2 sound
External DSL modem
Logitech wireless mouse/keyboard
20" Digital Flat panel screen

Software that worked just fine in the past:
Alcohol 120% v.1.48
Roxio CD/DVD v.6.2

Did you try reinstalling and setting up the drives as I had suggested in my earlier post?

You should also use the software that came with the drive and not the Roxio.

Well if you read my post, I had the question about the drive on the cable.

I understood it to be correct as the Master at the very end of the cable?!  is that not correct?

And I tried the software that came with drive a long time ago. JUNK! didn't work either. Than it conflicted with other programs on my computer. I had to delete it and go into the registry to get rid of it compeletly.

I have uninstalled Roxio and deleted it from the registry before. I reinstalled it because that wasn't what the problem was.  I have gone to Alcohol about any conflictions with Roxio. They have none. They have worked great together in the past.

I recently installed a DSL modem that had its own Firmware a week ago and also changed a corrupt file to get Adobe Acrobat 6.0 pro to work.  After doing these two things my drive no longer works AGAIN.   Like I said so far this drive has been a headache because it is toooooo touchy!  Any other ideas?  ANYONE? thanks.

If you are going to use the cable select method the perhaps this is the area of misunderstanding. I used the cable connectors in the fashion  I previously stated for master/slave set up. There is a difference. As for your software, perhaps you didn't close your anti-virus and other open programs before installing the software. You should try and be patient and methodical when working with and installing new hardware or software. Rushing things or attatching pre-conceived ideas that aren't working for a problem will only make matters worse.

Ok steps taken so far:

Clear NVRAM

Uninstalled Secondary IDE

Put Sony DRU-510A in the middle of the cable and set it as Master drive.

Installed Sony DRU-510A by itself first

Than did Firmware update again v.(f)  newest update from Sony.

I can't get this drive to do anything! When you put a disk in the drive the Orange light stays on for about a minute now but the drive doesn't do anything.  When I try to check if there is a disk in the drive from "explore" it tells me to insert a disk in the drive.

I installed the DVD-rom second. this drive functions fine. naturally.

I am again exploring other problems with the computer that may have caused problems in the past.  Network card (on motherboard).

Does anyone have an idea about Flashing a new bios.  (will it help)  If so, I have A01 and there is now A04.  Do I have to do all the ones in between (A02, A03)  Or can I just straight to A04?

Thanks!
