Inspiron 5100 , 30 GBHard drive skipping at random moments

Hello there. I own a Inspiron 5100 with a 2.4 ghz cpu, 256 ram and a hitach 30gb Dk23ea hard drive. The laptop has always operated smoothly without any pauses or freezing. Just recently, however, the hard drive light comes on and the hard drive tends to skip and freeze for a second. This problem is very noticeable since I play computer games on the laptop. This slight pause occurs every 15 seconds or so and is very annoying, especially during computer games. I tried everything from defragging, running scan disks, eliminating unwanted processes. Thanks for your help guys.
