Adding PCI to SATA3 controller and SSD Disk on DELL Precision 490
Hi,
I just bought a 120GB Vertex 3 2.5" and a PCIE to SATA3 controller.
My pc, a 4-years-old DELL Precision 490, has Vista installed into a SATA DISK (I think SATA2) and I wanted to multiboot Win7 onto new SSD.
I mounted controller and SSD, and I can see them in Windows Vista. I ran diskpart to create an aligned partition, formatted NTFS and assigned a letter.
I inserted Windows 7 disc, tried to install it using "custom" option and when selected new SSD disk I noticed a warning below that said me I cannot install windows onto that disk. Clicking the warning told me:
"Windows cannot be installed to this disk. This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the computer's BIOS menu."
I went into the bios but I cannot find any option to set "boot enabled" to PCI-E port.
Can you help me please ?
In case PCI-E will not work, does exist a way to use that SSD taking advantage of SATA3/6Gbps speed?
Please note thaton Precision manual I can see these ports:
PCI-X card slot
PCI-Express x8 card slot, wired as x4
PCI-Express x16 card slot --------> I mounted controller here.

Hello joker197cinque, I am in a very similiar situation. My motherboard has two PCIe x16 slots, but these are dedicated for video cards only and cannot be used for any other type of device, as advised by Dell support. This system is only about 6 months old, so you would think that Dell would have provided support for Sata 3 on this higher end system, but not so.
I also have a SSD Sata 3 and would like to add a SSD Sata 3 controller card. I did purchase one the was a PCIe x1 that I installed in the PCIe x4 slot I ran a benchmark on the drive and got sequential reads and writes of 420 mbps. As you know, the specifications for Sata 3 are 600 mbps, and I understand that this is not possible to achieve, but should be able to achieve close to the 500 mbps mark. If I can obtain 420 mbps on a PCIe x1 card in a PCIe x4 slot, I should be able to gain over the 420 mbps with a PCI x4 card. The PCI x1 supports only one lane while the PCI x4 supports two lanes.
The PCIe x1 card was very unstable so I removed it and connected the SSD Sata 3 to the onboard Intel Sata 2 controller, and ran the benchmark again, and got 285 mbps on both sequential reads and writes, which is very close to the Sata 2 specifications of a maximum of 300 mbps. When the SSD was installed on the PCIe x1 Sata 3 controller, the system booted to the desktop in 10 seconds. With the SSD on the Sata 2 onboard Sata controller, the system boots to the desktop in 30 seconds. With the original WD VelociRaptor 300 GB Sata 2, the system took 90 seconds to boot to the desktop.
The probelm I have is locating a better quality Sata 3 controller card that is a PCI x4. All the higher quality Sata 3 PCIe cards are PCIe x8. These will not work in the PCIe x16 slots.

There isn't an answer to this. It is not validated and therefore not a dell issue.

Will the LSI 9212-4i4e work in a Dell Poweredge T110. In a x8 pci-e slot. With Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. Will it allow be to use 2xSamsung 840 Pro 256GB SSD in Raid0 mode. Do I set the BIOS to ACHI or RAID. Can I use two Seagate 4TB Barracuda XT as the other two SATA3 drives? Do I need to use UEFI BIOS to create a 4TB partition?
