CDRW and DVD-RW Not Working

Question

I have a Dimension 3000 that is 5 yrs old. It came with a Sony CRX217E CDRW and I installed a NEC 1100A DVD-RW. Neither of these drives are working. They have identical symptoms. They show up in My Computer and it says they are working properly under Properties. I can explore contents of media, but I can't get media to play when inserted. I have uninstalled/reinstalled both drives to no avail.  I can't believe that both drives have failed at the same time. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get these drives working? Thanks, Denny

Hi Denny, My daughter had one of these systems. Can you just check device manager for me and see if any problems or errors show up for the optical drives?

On the back of the DVDRW is the jumper set to cable select. support.dell.com/.../parts.htm Ensure that the jumper setting on the new drive is set for 'cable select'

So you can read discs with both drives? Both CDs and DVDs?

I had trouble with an optical drive once ... iTunes had installed filter drivers that interfered with its correct operation.

That was my guess, that one of the drives had failed.
