Hi Denny,
My daughter had one of these systems. Can you just check device manager for me and see if any problems or errors show up for the optical drives?

On the back of the DVDRW is the jumper set to cable select.
support.dell.com/.../parts.htm
Ensure that the jumper setting on the new drive is set for "cable select"

So you can read discs with both drives? Both CDs and DVDs?

I had trouble with an optical drive once ... iTunes had installed filter drivers that interfered with its correct operation.

I found the problem. The cdrw had failed. Thanks for the help.

That was my guess, that one of the drives had failed.
