Yes, I'm fairly certain you need a new drive. As you are checking the available drives, you'll find the manufacturers normally specify if a drive operates both horizontally and vertically.
No! Not a suggested answer! A CORRECTION! My computer is not 580S; it is 530S! My face is red. I was so interested in writing and checking for answers that I saw another post with 580 and my mind "made" me put that in my post instead of the correct 530S. Sorry. Still need advice on whether there is any way to fix or clean existing optical drive or should I just replace it? What will do the best job in this vertical alignment?
benchmarkreviews.com/index.php gives a benchmark report on the Asus Model DRW-24B1ST DVD burner and says it will work in vertical position. Seems to be a good report but is two years old. Interesting comment was that it was quiet. Some reviews I saw said quiet; others said noisy! I could not find specs on Asus site, so had to do a search. For about $23, I can't afford to spend any more time searching for the "perfect" drive, so we'll try this one. I'll update this after I install it. Thanks for reply.

Hi Chuckssite,
LOL! No problem with the model.

I found the specs for that drive HERE. Vertical operation is supported.
