Equallogic / Nas volumes

No, it is not possible to move the NAS reserve volumes to different pools. Currently you can only do the following to a NAS volume:

• Rename the volume
• Change the volume description
• Change the volume RAID preference
• Bind the volume to a pool member (CLI command only, and requires a multi-member pool)

In order to move a NAS to another pool, there are a few options.

Option one, this method would require downtime: The existing NAS configuration would need to be removed, and re-created in the other pool.  This would require that the data hosted in the NAS reserve be copied and/or backed to a safe location first, and all shares and disk quota’s documented for recreation. Once the NAS service and volume reserve are re-crated in the new pool, the data is copied back, the shares and any disk quotas would need to be re-configured.

Option two, this method is for no down time: First, you would need to contact your sales team to see if you can get a loaner array (large enough to match your existing 6010 data storage).  Then you would add the loaner to the 6010 pool (the one with the NAS reserve volume), once the data has balanced onto both the 6010 and the loaner, move the original 6010 to the 6510 pool (this will leave all data on the loaner in the NAS pool).  Once the 6010 is moved, allow volumes to balance in the 6510 pool (on both the 6510 and 6010).  Once balanced, move the 6510 to the pool where the NAS volume resides.  Again, once data has balanced, then move whatever data volumes back to the proper pool of the the original member (if necessary, depending on the array type you have, i.e., one is a SATA the other was a SAS).  Once this is done, you can vacate the loaner array, and rename the pools as needed to match the original designation.  If you decide on this method, I would strongly suggest that you contact support for a more thorough step by step instruction.

By default, the NAS Service will be configured in the default pool.  You can select any other pool that has enough free space for the service; however, you cannot move the NAS Service to a different pool later.  Therefore, select the storage pool carefully, based on expected space usage for the NAS Service and other pool use (such as volumes, snapshots, and delegated space to replication partners).
