restore factory settings on 2 yrs old inspiron 1545 - can only acccess cmd prompt

hi,

2 yr inspiron 1545 that has suddenly stopped booting.

i can get to the system recovery options menu but find that selecting the

"Dell DataSafe Restore and Emergency Backup" just freezes the PC

(I wasn't prompted for id/pw)

DOS prompt works, I've got my data off  & I have an X: drive with what seems to be rebuild files

do you know how I can kickoff the factory rebuild from DOS?

Thank you

Hi chrisl123456,

Welcome to the Community

Hi,

I found that you have issue on the system not booting up, but you are able to go to the DOS prompt screen.

*** Note – try the below steps only if you have backed up your data. The below steps will erase all the data on the hard drive and restore it to factory setting.

Steps that you can perform.

1. On the DOS prompt screen, type the following lines, pressing after each line.

path d:\windows;d:\windows\system32

d:

cd tools

imagex /apply d:\dell\image\factory.wim 1 c:\

It would take a few minutes to start the process of restoring the computer to factory setting

Please check the following steps and Let me know if you need any help.

*** Note :-  if this doesn’t work :- we need to install the operating system with the cd.

Thanks

Hi Nikhil,

thank you for your prompt response,  there is no D: drive on the PC but there is an X drive so I substituted X in your instructions above

ImageX started ok, and displayed the following:

---------------------------

ImageX Tool for Windows

Copyright......blah blah

Progress: 0%

[INFO] c:\. [Restore Sec. Descriptor: (seq. 25) -> SACL is going away (acecount=

=1)] (GLE = 0)

--------------------------------

and it just sits there for multiple hours with progress remaining at 0% - mouse still moves so PC is not completely frozen.  the PC doesn't have a hard disk light so I have no clues what it is doing.

I didn't get any CDs when I bought the PC.

any furhter ideas?

Thank you

Chris

One thing you can do in the mean time is run an extended hard drive diagnostic.  F12 at powerup.  Chances are very good that a dead or dying drive is the cause of the problem.

hi again,

looks like it was the hard disk  - so  I've bought a new hard disk from you (actually a guy called Sumuk - ref 34820079)

he said he'd call back but I've yet to hear.  however problem now is he's sent the wrong OS (vista basic rather than vista premium and the wring driver files - dell studio rather than the inspiron 1545)

could you send me the right cds please?

Thankyou

Chris
