Hi Adam2004,

Most burning software is compatible with the NEC 2100.  While I am not familiar
with CDRWIN, Nero and Easy CD Creator should work fine.  Each, at their Web Sites,
have updates available.  Updates are often supplied for the recognition of newer
drives.  Make sure your software is at the current revision level.

Hi,

Nero 6 actually DOES work with my NEC 2100 but 8x certified Verbatim Media are only burnt at 4x speed. The Verbatim DVD Compatibility Guide (http://www.verbatim-europe.com/templates/show_image_data.php?mode=download&pr_id=35&t_code=2&kind=file) suggests a firmware update for all listed NEC Drives (the 2100 is not listed). On the other hand NEC recommends Verbatim media (http://www.necd.de/softwareoverview2.php?id=215) and affirm that they can be burnt at 8x speed. I don't know what to do and would really appreciate if anyone had an idea. By the way: DELL suggested to reinstall my OS...

How old is your computer and how many programs are running while you are trying to burn?  The computer may be slowing you down even though the burner and media may be theoretically capable of burning at 8X.

Hallo Steve,

I also got a Dimension 8300 (3,0 GHz) with 1024 MB RAM, 2 HDD (1. HDD: Maxtor 80 GB; 2.: WD 80 GB). The data I am burning are stored on the 2. HDD.
I usually do not run any other programs while burning the data except Zone Alarm and Antivirus.

Thanks guys.  I downloaded Nero 6 this weekend and it worked beautifully (previously I was using version 5 which didn't recognize my DVD-RW).  I won't even bother looking for another burning up as Nero has always been my favorite!

I don't know.  Dell has had NEC detune the 2500 model to create the 2100 model and maybe that has caused the problem.  You could try different media.  You also should run spybot to make sure you don't have some programs running that you didn't know about (it is freeware).   If the burner will burn at 8X, and you are using Verbatim 8x media, your system should support an 8x burn.

My burner is a 2.4 so 4X and 8X are not something I can test… However, since hubbecker has been throwing software at it I think it is possible that it may have scrambled the burner as far as software is concerned.

I can't speak for Nero or Sonic, but Roxio started using partial dynamic drive detection in V6 and exclusively in V7. This eliminates updates to recognize new drives and when firmware is applied to the drive to increase things like burning speeds, it is automatically recognized by the software.

I would suggest running the drive tests in Nero to see what it finds the drive capable of. If it is less than 8X, clear the NVRAM and delete the drive so it will be redetected. Rerun the tests.

While I wouldn't expect AV and AdAware to bog down a 3.0ghz PC, it wouldn't be anything big to eliminate them to see if it is affecting the throughput.
