Dell u2312hm usb ports not working

Hi, I have 3 dell u2312hm. All the usb ports doesnt seem to be working. Windows update already installed the needed software. The CD that came with it is useless. I tried to installed the powernap software but all the screen suddenly turn red. I also tried to install the driver as DELL-Chris M suggested on this link http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/peripherals/f/3529/p/19461061/20160335.aspx#20160335 but all the screens turn red. All the cables and power cord are plug in tight and secured. I am using windows 7 btw. According to my research the powernap is conflicting with windows 7 as DELL -Chris M suggested on other forums. Any specific device that this monitor usb ports can powered? I tried connecting keyboard/mouse, usb charger, usb stick. None of them works or powered on. And yes I did tried all the usb ports and not even one ports powered one cables/chargers ect.

Hi Dextroz,

Please ensure that the USB upstream cable (refer to image 3) is connected to the monitor as well as the computer. If not, connect the upstream cable to your computer.
Reconnect the USB peripherals (downstream connector). Switch off and then turn on the monitor again. Reboot the computer.

Connect the USB cable that came with your monitor to the monitor's USB upstream port (no.6 in image 1) and the computer. Once this cable is connected, you can use the USB connectors on the side and bottom of the monitor. Connect your USB devices to USB downstream ports (no. 7 in image 1 and image 2). You can only use this connector after you have connected the USB cable to the computer and USB upstream connector on the monitor

Some USB devices like external portable hard drive require higher electric current. Hence, it is not recommended to connect these devices to the monitor; connect the device directly to the computer system.

You can also refer to the owner's manual for any questions:  http://dell.to/xrlJ7m
Hope this helps.
Kindly revert and let me know for further clarifications.

I just had the rear-most USB port on my U2312HM stop working - couldn't type my password when I got back from lunch.

Tried the mouse, nothing, but fine in the other port.  Monitor is only a week old, so wasn't worried if I had to send it back.

Solution?  Turn the monitor off and on.  Must be a power/firmware thing...?

Hi,

Please share this information:

  • Did the USB port start working after you restarted the monitor?
  • Is the keyboard functioning properly on the other USB ports of the monitor?
You can try to disconnect and reconnect the USB upstream cable(refer to the image) and then connect the USB devices. Switch off and then turn on the monitor again. Connect the USB cable that came with your monitor to the monitor's USB upstream port (no.6 in image 1) and the computer. Once this cable is connected, you can use the USB connectors on the side and bottom of the monitor. Connect your USB devices to USB downstream ports (no. 7 in image 2). You can only use this connector after you have connected the USB cable to the computer and USB upstream connector on the monitor.

Hope this helps.
Please reply if you have any further questions.

This looks like a firewire/printer USB cable. Is this correct? Or, is there a specialized Dell (or off-market) cable that must be purchased?

Thanks.

This post was VERY helpful!

Hi ImaF,

This is a USB upstream cable and it is slightly different from a USB printer cable as shown in the images.

You may purchase this cable by contacting Dell Sales. Select the country and you will be able to contact the regional sales support.

Hope this helps.
Please revert for any clarification.
