Ok, here's what you need to do. Go to this article, and scroll down and click the plus sign next to "let me fix it myself". Follow those instructions carefully. That will solve the problem.
Thanks. I'd already done that. I can Uninstall it & reboot laptop & it installs it again, but the disc drive still doesn't work.
If I insert a disc into to, it doesn't even prompt to open up what's on the disc etc. The disc drive is making all the right noises, just I can't access anything on screen.
The disc drive is just a slot on the laptop, no drawer that pops out or anything I can disconnect.
I think I'm going to have to go back to the factory settings again & start from scratch.

Do you see the drive in the BIOS?

If I look up the COMPUTER, I can see C: (OS) D: (Recovery) and a Norton Backup. There's no CD Drive anymore

Hi, thanks for the link.
Tried the fix & it just said it couldn't find the drive.
Any more suggestions?

I've done this:
Control Panel, System & Maintenance, System, Device Manager.
I can see the drive, but when I double-click it, I get this error message:
"Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)
Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and to see if there is a solution available."
I've clicked the 'Check for Solutions' button but all it says is "could not load driver software"
