CPU upgrade for optiplex gx260
I have a gx260 with socket 478 which I am looking to upgrade. I have been reading up on compatible processors. I was thinking of trying the Intel Pentium 4 Processor 2.80 GHz, 512K Cache, 533 MHz FSB. Is this one going to work?

Intel Pentium 4 Processor 2.80 GHz, 512K Cache, 533 MHz FSB may work with the OptiPlex GX260 socket 478 motherboard. However, the system has been tested only with the following processors:

Max is a specific NORTHWOOD. NO PRESCOTTS NO 800MHZ FSB.

Do you know anyone with this board that has actually gotten the Intel Pentium 4 3.06GHz, 512, 533 fsb to work??? I actually purchased that very cpu and made an attempt. Here are the specs:

I wasn't able to get the computer to POST. Couldn't even load the bios. At first I thought it could be a defective cpu as it was used but then I put it in my parents Compaq SR1510NX and it worked just fine. I don't know what I could have done wrong and I am at a loss as to why this cpu didn't work because everyone seems to agree that it is the best this board can support.

Bios must be upgraded BEFORE changing CPU. What is the "S" Spec of the CPU?
What is your bios version. When did you remove the CMOS battery and clear?

I appreciate your help with this. It was the SL6S5. The Bios was upgraded to A09 but I did not try to remove battery and clear CMOS. Do you think that is why it didn't work?? Also, does it matter what the "S" spec #is? I know some of them have a higher core stepping revision. Don't know if this makes a difference or not.

My GX260 has a shipping date of 3/31/2003. I have a 3.06G and HT is enabled. I believe GX260 shipping after a certain date (some time at the end of 2002 or the beginning of 2003) have motherboards that support HT. The earlier ones do not. (This is based on a Revision of the Chipset).
What do you mean by "didn't work?" If you had PC2100 Ram in the system that may also have been an issue. You need PC2700 or PC3200 Ram and it must be Low density INTEL compatible ram.

I'm not sure when the shipping date was. What I meant by "didn't work" is that the when I installed the cpu it would not post. I do have PC2100. It is low density. I have 1 stick of DDR PC2100 that is 1gig and 1 of the original sticks which is also 2100 and equals a whopping 64 megs. Thank you for telling me about the possible memory issue. I will upgrade that as well and go ahead and max it out with 2 gigs of PC 3200. After I do that I will make another attempt with the P4 3.06G HT.
