Laptop battery manufacture date
I just purchased from dell a new 9 cell replacement battery for my studio 1458 laptop. However the battery I received is manufactured in oct 2008. I have heard that an older battery even if unused is not as good as a newly manufactured battery. Is it typical that batteries this old are supplied?

It could be that's when the case was made. I would be more interested in the warranty, capacity, and date code on the cells inside. If you just got that FROM DELL and not a 3rd party I would insist on returning it for a New Battery Manufactured at least in DEC 2012.:emotion-3: Even if not used Lipo Cells Degrade over time until they are dead.
