KM632 wireless keyboard and mouse - turn off num lock?

I really need to turn off the NUM LOCK on my new KM632 keyboard.

I'm a very old-school EMACS user, and I use the keypad for editor commands, for which I need num-lock off.

(A similar question was asked by  suebe53, but the answer related to using the keyboard for mouse movement, which is not what I want)

How do I do it?

Thanks.

OK, well, that sound you hear is the sound of the keyboard going in the trash.

Please let your product development team know that people still require the use of the key, so they can't just drop it. And please also tell your marketing team that if the keyboard has reduced functionality, that should be noted on the box so there are no nasty surprises when you get it open....

Thanks for the info - at least it saved me spending more fruitless time.

I had a similar problem with my keyboard, and also posted about it on these forums.  A few helpful people tried to assist, but no one from Dell chimed in.  Saurabh, I appreciate your responses to this thread.

I echo Zysygy's sentiments.  The Num Lock key is an important part of the keyboard that should not have been removed, any more than it would be appropriate to remove "Tab" or "Caps Lock." The fact that this was done at all is surprising; the fact that there was no warning of this is worse.  The fact that Dell's collective response to the situation--I've spoken to technical support more than once about this issue--is to simply shrug, mumble something about how their "research" has indicated that no one uses the Num Lock key anymore, and suggest that I go out and buy another keyboard, is unacceptable.

This is, if I remember correctly, my fourth Dell computer.  I will not be buying a fifth.  While I am happy with the computer overall, if Dell's customer service has fallen so far that they would ship a keyboard missing an important key that has been a standard component on keyboards for 30 years, fail to provide a work-around for the missing functionality, and respond to unhappy customers by extending a metaphorical middle finger, then there is no reason for me to give the company any further business.

Hi Zysygy,

KM632 keyboard does not have a physical Num Lock button. You can toggle the numlock key on/off using the onscreen keyboard if you are using windows operating system. Follow the steps below to access the on-screen keyboard :

  • Click on Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Ease of Access -> On Screen Keyboard
  • If you do not see the numeric keypad you can turn it on by pressing the options button on onscreen keyboard and click 'Turn on numeric key pad' and click on OK
  • Now you can toggle NumLock on/off using the NumLock button on the onscreen keyboard.

This  needs to be done only once because the windows will take the previous state of 'numlock' by default and it will be disabled when you will restart the computer with the 'numlock' disabled. (Haven't tested it; this is a work around that may work for you)

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the prompt reply, but that doesn't work.

I can now switch Num Lock off, but as soon as I hit a number on the numeric pad of the KM632, it switches automatically back to Num Lock ON (I get the green message on my monitor saying "Num Lock On").

Any alternatives?

Hi Zysygy,

Thank you for the reply. By design, the keyboard is not built to manage the 'numlock'. It appears that the on-screen keyboard does not work completely either. I tried, but could not find a workable alternative.

Do reply if you have any further questions.

Hi,

I have a question. I have followed the instructions from this page: but I still cannot control num lock. The thing is that in instruction writes "The Caps Lock and Num Lock functions are controlled by an application for the KM632 Wireless Keyboard." but I don't know how to do this. In program files in dell folder I have 3 applications: IndicatorOSD, LaunchOSDSrv and OSDSrv but there's no action after I start them. When I turn off num lock in on-screen keyboard it turns on again after I press one of num lock buttons. Can you tell me how can I control num lock with this application?
Thanks in advance for answer
