Your DVD drive is gone. You will need to get another one. The same thing happened to my LG DVD drive. I too have an I8000. I purchased a new one on ebay and now all is working.
Thanks for your comments and your web-site. I've connected with Dell and they agree that the drive is shot. They have agreed to replace it as it seems to still be under warrenty. Hopefully it will arrive in a couple of days as I'm reformatting my harddrive and need the DVDcdROM and the floppy drive to do it.
