suggest you try cleaning the laser lens & if that fails then consider trying a firmware update if one's available.

Thanks for the advice...

I've tried a lens cleaner (the type you put in, run for 30secs then remove) - I can now read CDRs but still cannot write. I haven't tried different media, but I've always used reasonable discs (Philips/TDK/Verbatim etc) with no previous problems. I've tried CloneCD and CDRWin but they still don't work.

They do however come up with a 'Power Calibration Error' message.

Could this just be due to a REALLY dirty lens which needs proper cleaning? If so, how do I get into the drive to do it and what should I use?

Any other suggestions would be great....

Cheers, Gus.

'Power Calibration Error' is not good!
IME it usually indicates a dying drive though you should try a different make of cdr &/or update the firmware.

I have the same problem, This has actually gone on for several months now. The Drive will work normally for everything else but won't let me burn cd's. I have downloaded the software numerous times and when I do it works for a while then stops again. The message I get is "drive currently being used by Adaptec DirectCD". I have looked through the site extensively to see if there is a fix but all the fixes I have found here really don't work. GOODLUCK!

AND FOR GOD SAKES YOU GUYS AREN'T MAKING IT AS EASY AS DELL!

This machine has become a two thousand dollar paper weight, a little help PLEASE!

if the issue wasn't fixed yet....

try unnistalingl the cd creator software, and allow what is likely windows xp to take over for copying

also you would be amazed at some of the cd's how the sides are reversed!  i found that on a batch of cd's.

also seems that the system needs to format the cd's each time it prompted to make a copy

Uh oh, my Sony CRX700E gives me a "power calibration error" once in a while but then works when I try it again.  I was going to sell it, but now that I know it might be dying my conscience may not let me sell it.  doh!
