Hi majong12345,

The normal DVDs are being played so the hardware functionality of the DVD drive is fine. If the issue happens with one blank DVD I would suggest you to try with different blank DVDs.

Do reply with your answers. Then I can check and see what can be done.

Actually no, because it's not reading newer disc's either. It seems to be playing disc's at random.

Well I just got two discs working, a data disc and a film, though it's still making a buzzing noise as it loads which it hasn't done before. Maybe it just doesn't read these old disc's?

Hi Majong12345,

Are these discs burned on this PC, or were they burned on another PC? Is it just video discs you have trouble with or others as well.

Audio cdrws dont work although, it was an old one i tried. I'm going to try burn a cd, i'll get back with the results. Yes the DVDs were burned on another computer but they are fairly new and they were recognized before.

No, blank CD-R's don't work. The drive makes a quiet whirring noise as it obviously tries to load, then packs in and repeats it. It does this about four times then stops.

It said a blank CD and a DVD with a movie burned onto it are not supported. But a real DVD worked.

Ok, let's do some hardware troubleshooting. Grab the Nero Infotool (link in my toolbox below). Run that and insert several blank CD and DVD discs. What you want to see is if the blank media codes are correctly read by the drive. If they are not, let me know.

Sit rep: Normal silver cd's don't work either. I'm using VLC and i'm getting this error message.

VLC is unable to open the MRL 'cdda:///D:/'. Check the log for details.

Any thoughts?

If there's a movie burned onto it, then it's not blank. Blank means blank. What I want to see is if the drive can properly read the media type.

I've only got blank CD's, no DVD's, and they do not work.

When you insert a blank CD, is it recognized as a blank CD?

No. It dosent load up. It dosen't even show up in the computer folder when i insert it, you know under drive C:. So it can't be recognized.

I would try the upper and lower filter trick (link below). This does not work with Windows 8, so let me know if you have 8 instead of 7.

I have Windows 7. Well I tried a copied DVD using the above method, which worked. So then i tried a real silver CD and it didn't work. I got this message - The media in CD/DVD drive is not readable. It seems to think the drive is empty, bearing in mined this is a perfect CD with no scratches that worked before and I have ripped to the computer. And it has not fixed it. Although every normal DVD seems to work. I don't know if this will help but this started when i put an old, quite scratched DVD in which didnt work. Could that have something to do with it?
